Description

About the Book

When a fire destroys the orphanage where she worked, Evelyn Radcliffe flees to the Texas Hill Country with an orphan in tow and a killer in pursuit. Will a rugged horse rancher hold the key to her future--and her past?

Book Synopsis

Ten years after her parents were killed, Evelyn Radcliffe is once more homeless. The orphanage that was her refuge and later her workplace has burned to the ground, and only she and a young orphan girl have escaped. Convinced this must be related to her parents' murders, Evelyn flees with the girl to Mesquite Springs in the Texas Hill Country and finds refuge in the home of Wyatt Clark, a talented horse rancher whose plans don't include a family of his own.

At first, Evelyn is a distraction. But when it becomes clear that trouble has followed her to Mesquite Springs, she becomes a full-blown disruption. Can Wyatt keep her safe from the man who wants her dead? And will his own plans become collateral damage?

Suspenseful and sweetly romantic, Out of the Embers is the first in a new series that invites you to the Texas Hill Country in the 1850s, when the West was wild, the men were noble, and the women were strong.

"Amanda Cabot has written an intriguing, chilling mystery, and she winds it through the pages of a sweet romance in a way that made me keep turning the pages fast to see what was going to happen next. An absolutely excellent read."--Mary Connealy, author of Aiming for Love

Magnetic Romantic Mystery from Old West

There’s just something magnetic about a light romantic tale from the Old West. Add some mystery and suspense and you have the ingredients for a very enjoyable read by Amanda Cabot, Out of the Embers. Evelyn Radcliffe and young Polly escape the orphanage fire that is deliberately set. How far must they run to find a new, secure life? Evelyn is a very mature, loyal young woman who will do anything to protect those she loves. Her “adoption” of Polly proves how unselfish she is. I liked how her unselfish helping at the Circle C eventually leads to her dream future. But the path to get there is rocky. Wyatt Clark is quickly interested in the young woman who comes to stay at the Circle C. However, the facts aren’t building a truthful foundation for a friendship, let alone anything more. Wyatt is a very responsible and caring individual who puts others above himself, as well. Which is why he is still present on the Circle C, a place he longs to leave. I love that Wyatt is not afraid to accept help and that he also listens to the voice of reason. These qualities go far in any relationship, be it friendship or love. Eventually, we see the far-reaching effects of lives lived for others. I am not as impressed with Polly, the child in this novel. However, she does seem to act true to her identity. Unless he shows up again in future books and bigger roles, I was unimpressed with the story thread of “the Watcher.” You’ll have to read the book to see if you agree. You may form a totally different opinion, which makes writing and reading these reviews fun. You get to read the actual text, write a review, then see what other readers think. One thing I know. I got a sneak peek at a few pages of the next book, and I am anxious to read the next volume, Dorothy and Brandon’s story. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell through NetGalley. This did not influence my opinions, which are solely my own.

Great Tale

Out of the Embers by Amanda Cabot is book one in the Mesquite Springs series. Evelyn always feels that someone is watching her when she must leave the orphanage and head into town. She needs to head into town to sell the doilies that the children have made. One of the children, Polly, is with her on her latest trip. Ready to set home, the wagon breaks down. Once they finally are able to journey home, they discover the entire orphanage has burned to the ground. No one is left and no one from the town really cares. They never really cared for the orphanage anyway. Evelyn must take Polly and flee. But where? How? And who is watching her? Why? This delightful tale book you on an adventure set in the 1850's. There are lost of exciting twists and turns and it is an intriguing tale. I did find it a little confusing on some of the characters, but if you are patient, will all come together in the end. Out of the Embers is a fun read and best of all it's the beginning of the series, but can be read alone. You will come to love the characters in the book and enjoy the story. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do. I do recommend Out of the Embers.

Such a Pleasant Read!

"Oh God, what should I do?" Devasted after finding the only home she has known for the past ten years reduced to ashes, Evelyn Radcliffe flees Logansville, Texas with a young orphaned girl who has become like a sister to her. Travelling with Polly for days on end with no particular destination in mind brings them to the outskirts of Mesquite Springs, where Evelyn finally feels a sense of peace, for she has spent the past ten years looking over her shoulder, sensing danger lurking just around the corner. It's in Mesquite Springs where she meets a horse rancher named Wyatt Clark, whose kind family offers Evelyn and Polly a warm welcome while Evelyn searches for a means of supporting herself. It seems like providence provides her with the perfect opportunity, doing what she knows and loves; managing a restaurant. But will what she holds dear, eventually put a killer back on her trail? And will Wyatt acknowledge how the lovely proprietor of "Polly's Place" might change the course of his future? Readers will be charmed with the "folksy" atmosphere in Mesquite Springs where kindness and solidarity abound. But like any small town, there are misfortunes, and those who refuse to be thwarted. Written with a pleasant cadence and portraying an innocent romance, "Out of the Embers" hides a slightly darker agenda which the author cleverly disguises until the very end. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.

Beauty For Ashes

An impressive start to a new series that will keep you up way to late as you won’t want to put it down. With just enough mystery and intrigue to pull you in and a well developed story you will soon find yourself immersed in these characters lives. I love orphan stories as my mom was raised in an orphanage therefore Evelyn and Polly had my empathy from the start. Throw in a horse rancher and you then have a sweet romance develop but with many bumps along the way. This book is a complete package and will leave you eagerly anticipating book two. It shows forgiveness, second chances, and sacrificial love. The descriptive words will have you envisioning bluebonnet season in Texas and the tantalizing food that Evelyn cooks up. I recommend making this your next must read, as it is a perfect example of God giving beauty for ashes. I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
