Book Synopsis

From the award-winning author of the Melanie Travis Canine Mysteries, senior sisters-in-law Peg Turnbull and Rose Donovan get along about as well as stray cats and pedigree pooches most days. But aside from being Melanie Travis's beloved aunts, outspoken Peg and even-keeled Rose do have something in common--a true knack for solving murders . . .

Murder, She Wrote meets The Golden Girls in the second Senior Sleuths Mystery!

When a typically closed-off Peg attempts online dating at Rose's strong urging, the experience plays out like an embarrassing mistake. At least, until she matches with Nolan Abercrombie--intelligent, attractive, and a self-proclaimed dog lover. The two share an instant connection that has Peg cautiously excited to finally bring someone special into her busy world of Standard Poodles and conformation shows.

Before Peg can admit that Rose was right and let down her walls for the budding romance, a terrible accident claims Nolan's life. As details about his background and tragic death come to light, Peg has a serious hunch that someone successfully plotted to kill her first real date in decades . . .

With suspects galore and a slew of puzzling clues to peel through, Peg and Rose team up to solve a dangerous mystery unfolding before their eyes. The question is: Can the unlikely duo turn their radically different personalities into an advantage as they scramble to ID the guilty culprit--or will they manage to work against each other and find themselves precisely where a meticulous murderer wants them to be?

Review Quotes

Praise for Peg and Rose Solve a Murder

"With Melanie Travis away on vacation, it falls to her feuding aunts to solve a crime . . . If you love dogs and bridge, this character-driven mystery will be especially pleasing." --Kirkus Reviews

"This spin-off from Berenson's Melanie Travis mysteries (Melanie is Peg and Rose's niece) combines well-delineated but very different senior protagonists with details of raising, showing, and judging show dogs, especially poodles. The resolution of the long-standing feud sets the table for future outings starring cases for the sisters-in-law turned sleuths." --Booklist

"Fans of Laurien Berenson's Melanie Travis Canine mysteries will enjoy seeing Peg and Rose, secondary characters in some of her other books, take center stage. Berenson gives Peg and Rose rich backgrounds that bring them to life, and her strong storytelling skills will have you guessing whodunit until the end." --Mystery Scene

"Fans of the Melanie Travis series will be delighted." --Publishers Weekly

"Fans of Laurien Berenson's long-running Melanie Travis Canine Mysteries will be thrilled with Peg and Rose Solve a Murder, the first entry in a new spinoff series featuring Melanie's engaging aunts, Peg Turnbull and Rose Donovan . . . [Peg and Rose] stand on their own as capable, witty women who are more than up to the task of crime-solving." --BookPage

Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble by Laurien Berenson is a delightful story to read. Peg and Rose are quite a pair. I laughed often while reading their latest adventure. Rose has decided it is time for Peg to date and puts a profile for her on a dating site for seniors. Peg is shocked when the matches start rolling in. Peg is even more surprised when she finds one man with whom she would like to see more than once. When Nolan, Peg’s gentleman caller, ends up dead, Peg and Rose set out to find his killer. I like how Rose and Peg bicker back and forth. They even argue over who is going to drive. I like Laurien Berenson’s writing style. It is friendly and engaging. The characters are realistic and developed. I had gotten to know Peg from the Melanie Travis series. I was happy that Melanie and her family were included in the story. Peg and Rose are alike in some ways and dissimilar in others. Their strengths and weaknesses pair well for solving a mystery. The mystery was interesting. Rose keeps Peg on her toes. Peg likes to believe she does not miss a thing, but it turns out some things do escape her notice. It is a good thing Rose was on hand. The pair soon discover that the suspect list is quite lengthy. Nolan might have misrepresented himself to Peg (raise your hand if you are shocked). I was able to identify the guilty party early on, but I had fun following Peg and Rose as they investigated the crime. The mystery is neatly wrapped up at the end. While Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is the second A Senior Sleuths Mystery, it can be read as a standalone. Personally, I think that Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is better than Peg and Rose Solve a Murder. Peg’s poodles are front and center of course. Poodles are smart and lovable. I like that we get to learn about different dog breeds, dog shows, and dog show judging. It is amazing how one little thing can take a dog out of the running for the big prize. I look forward to Peg and Rose’s next adventure. Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is an entertaining tale with squabbling sisters-in-law, precious poodles, a dog show conundrum, a dead date, an excess of suspects, and scrumptious cake.
