Book Synopsis

A "propulsive thriller about secret organizations, hidden agendas, and the lengths one woman will go to reclaim her life" (Laura Dave, author of Reese's Book Club Pick The Last Thing He Told Me) from USA TODAY bestselling author Catherine McKenzie. At thirty-nine, Nicole Mueller's life is on the rocks in "this brilliant, tangled web of lies, cover ups and deception" (Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author). Her once brilliant law career is falling apart. She and her husband, Dan, are about to be forced out of the apartment they love. After a warning from her firm's senior partners, she receives an invitation from an exclusive women's networking group, Panthera Leo. Membership is anonymous, but every member is a successful professional. It sounds like the perfect solution to help Nicole revive her career. So, despite Dan's jokes that the group might be a cult, Nicole signs up for their retreat in Colorado. Once there, she meets the other women who will make up her Pride. A CEO, an actress, a finance whiz, a congresswoman: Nicole can't believe her luck. The founders of Panthera Leo are equally impressive. They explain the group's core philosophy: they're a girl's club in a boy's club world. Nicole is all in. And when she gets home, she soon sees dividends. Her new network quickly provides her with clients that help her relaunch her career, and a great new apartment too. The favors she must provide in return seem benign. But then she's called to the congresswoman's apartment late at night where she's pressed into helping her cover up a crime. And suddenly, Dan's concerns that something more sinister is at play seem all too relevant. Is Panthera Leo full of predators? And is Nicole the prey?

Smart and twisty

Wow, what a smart, twisty thriller this was!!! This started out at an average pace, slowly building the story, setting the background for Nicole and Dan while showing what she was currently dealing with. As the story progresses, I slowly begin to see fissures in her life, some due to her own personality and others due to the circumstances she’s living with. It was about half way through before things really began to pick up. I appreciated the fact that this author placed this story in a relevant time and with issues that are very real to our world today. I never really felt a deep connection to Nicole, although interestingly enough I did to Dan. I’m not sure how much the lack of connection affected my overall reaction to the story. I never disliked her or found myself judging her for her actions or reactions. Instead, I was just so darn curious to find out what this group was about, how it was going to affect her and where all the turns were going to take me in the end. This was not a fast paced thriller that’s like a roller coaster. Instead it was like walking through a maze that has little hints to show you the way and then a surprise when it was the wrong turn. This jumps back and forth from present time to the past but those time leaps were well noted so I had no confusion where I was in the story. The overall story had a feel unlike anything I’ve read before and I find myself continuing to soak it in.

Do you need a page turner that is hard to put down? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Nicole Mueller’s job is not going as planned as a lawyer. She was just notified that she was being demoted in the firm. When Nicole recieves an email inviting her to join a networking group called Panthera Leo, she jumps at the chance and joins. It’s a networking group who help women advance in a male dominated workforce. Her husband, Dan, is not so sure as he thinks it might be a cult. Is it too good to be true? Does this lead her to higher level positions or does it lead her astray? This fast paced book will have you on the edge of your seat as the secrets are unraveled. Are people who they seem to be? This book will keep you guessing until the end with all the twist and turns! A great book to take on a vacation or bring to your next book club meeting!
