Description

About the Book

Jules Verne, famous author of works such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth, transports us to unknown worlds and extraordinary adventures. But what influence does mathematics have on his stories? Is it possible that Verne anticipated so many scientific and technological advances with his imagination alone? This is a fascinating work of mathematical popularization in which we will accompany the author in his famous 'Extraordinary Journeys' to discover that behind every adventure lies a mathematical universe. Through carefully selected examples, the reader will explore how mathematics intertwines with Verne's narrative and science fiction, demonstrating his genius and his enormous capacity to integrate scientific knowledge with literature. Immerse yourself in Verne's world as you have never imagined it before. Join Verne's characters as they decode a secret note that reveals the way to the center of the Earth, or send a message to the Selenites using the Pythagorean theorem. Discover references to prominent mathematicians and scientists, and learn more about measuring a meridian arc and the sine theorem. Be amazed by the triangulation procedure, the indirect measurement of a granite wall, and the calculation of the number of grains in a wheat harvest, among other fascinating subjects. A work that shows us that, behind every adventure, there is a mathematical universe to be discovered.
