Children could easily read this book on their own if they are eight years old or older. The book does contain some bigger words and likely unfamiliar topics, but the author does a good job explaining them. Parts of it would be too simplistic for older children-though they'd probably still find the information fascinating and love the pictures-and children younger than this would likely need to have it read to them for the best understanding. Luckily, it's an interesting read, so if you're a parent or caregiver, you will probably enjoy learning about the red panda as well.
