About the Author

J. Drew Lanham is an ornithologist, naturalist, essayist, and poet whose work has been recognized with a MacArthur Grant, a Southern Book Prize, and a Reed Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center. His previous books include The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man's Love Affair with Nature, Sparrow Envy: Field Guide to Birds and Lesser Beasts, and Joy Is the Justice We Give Ourselves. A lifelong resident of South Carolina, he is an Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher in the Forestry and Environmental Conservation Department at Clemson University.
