Description

About the Book

Was Jesus raised from the dead? If Christianity is true are other religious false? These and other core questions about the Christian faith are addressed in an accessible and thought-provoking manner by theologican Maurice Wiles as he uses reason to reflect on issues of faith.

Book Synopsis

In this book noted Oxford theologian Wiles (What is Theology?) provides a clear and accessible introduction to Christian belief. Rather than simply stating and explaining the doctrinal tenets of Christian faith, however, Wiles sets forth what seem to him appropriate responses to basic questions about Christian belief that perplex Christians and non-Christians alike. Instead of providing a technical overview of Christian doctrine, he offers a short section within each chapter printed in bold type that discuss some of the issues that are important for reasonably assessing the truth claims of Christianity. Wiles free-flowing argument is not broken up with footnotes, although a bibliography at the end of the book provides suggestions for further reading for anyone interested in pursuing in more detail any of the book s topics. An index of biblical references is also included. Maurice Wiles is Regius Professor of Divinity Emeritus at Oxford University. He is the author of many books, including Christian Theology and Interreligious Dialogue. For: General audiences; clergy; seminarians>

Review Quotes

"Maurice Wile s free-flowing argument and narrative style provides engaging and incisive insights into the very nature of Christian faith and is highly recommended for students of Christianity and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in Christian theology." Betsy L.--Sanford Lakoff "Midwest Book Review "

"The contents are easy to read since they are written in nontechnical language... To those who want to explore a nonliteral approach to Christian faith, this book is an appropriate introduction." Richard Ruble, John Brown University, Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith, September 2000--Sanford Lakoff "Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith "

"Wiles provides here an accessible entry into key questions confronting contemporary Christian faith. He takes the approach of posing the questions people are actually asking and while his reasoned account of Christian faith is fully conversant with the science of the day and with biblical and historical scholarship, he takes care not to be overly technical in his approach...This text reads well and would be fully accessible to persons with no formal training in theology. It could profitably be used in local churches that want to see Christian faith engaged with contemporary science and biblical scholarship."--Sanford Lakoff

."..a clear, comprehensive, informative overview and introduction to the Christian faith." Reviewer s Bookwatch, May 2000--Sanford Lakoff

This text reads well and would be fully accessible to persons with no formal training in theology.
