Book Synopsis
You Don't Have to Give Up the Bible in Pursuit of Justice
Today's justice movements are often dominated by secular worldviews. But what if the Bible provides Christians with an even more compelling vision for a just and flourishing society? In Redeeming Justice, Christina Crenshaw integrates biblical analysis, examples from the present and historic church, and stories from her own life to provide a helpful model for doing justice work within a solidly orthodox and biblical worldview. This accessible guide will help you- replace narrow, secular prescriptions for societal change with a more holistic, inspiring, and biblical vision for transformation
- find encouragement in examples of biblical justice work drawn from centuries of Christian practice
- apply faith-based strategies for addressing societal issues such as human trafficking, border conflicts, homelessness, child hunger, and other avenues of justice work
As you are reminded that the church, though imperfect, remains God's chosen instrument for advancing His plan of love and redemption, you will be inspired to pursue justice not as the world dictates, but as the Word of God calls you.
Review Quotes
"I have dedicated my life to uncompromisingly proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ while simultaneously engaging in the fight to end human trafficking. It's because I am a follower of Jesus that I'm compelled to be involved in the work of justice. In Redeeming Justice, Christina has masterfully unpacked the importance of a biblically based approach to social justice. This book is engaging, thought-provoking, and transparent, and it reflects the heart of God for a lost and broken world. As she poignantly writes, 'Biblical justice work is redemptive work.'"
--Christine Caine, founder of A21 and Propel Women
"In Redeeming Justice, we get a much-needed return to Jesus, the gospel, the church, and the Bible as the solution for the transformation of hearts, families, poverty, and pain that we find throughout our world. I've had the privilege of walking side by side with Christina and her family in our local church as we have wrestled together with how to impact society holistically, with Jesus and the gospel at the center. This theological and practical book should be a mainstay for every believer, as we look to do good, seek justice, walk humbly with our God, and truly fulfill the ministry of Jesus to bind the brokenhearted, set the captives free, and preach the gospel to the poor."
--Jimmy Seibert, pastor of Antioch Church, Waco, TX
"In Redeeming Justice, Dr. Crenshaw does what few writers can--she raises the biblical call to social justice while holding accountable the ways Western culture has attempted a counterfeit of God's heart. This book is timely, revealing Dr. Crenshaw's deep personal awareness of the division in church and culture on social issues and calling the reader to take action--not performatively but scripturally. I will return to its wisdom often and recommend this book to those who feel caught in the tension of desiring justice and activism while remaining dedicated to a truly biblical worldview."
--Phylicia Masonheimer, founder and CEO of Every Woman a Theologian
"The biblical word justice has often been hijacked by unbiblical movements. As a result, many Christians shy away from the topic. Christina Crenshaw's work helps us lean into genuine, biblical, godly justice. Not only does she refute bad arguments, but she also helps Christians live out a life of justice where they have influence. If you care about truth, if you care about the vulnerable, and if you care about following Jesus, you'll want to read this book."
--Daniel Darling, director of the Land Center for Cultural Engagement and author of several books, including The Dignity Revolution, Agents of Grace, and In Defense of Christian Patriotism
"The concept of justice is contentious in our deeply polarized society. This is especially true of social justice, which is a volatile flashpoint in our increasingly rancorous political debates. In Redeeming Justice, Christina Crenshaw offers a vision of justice--including social justice--that is rooted in a biblical worldview rather than postmodern academic theories or progressive identity politics. Redeeming Justice offers the perfect balance of Christina's personal story, engagement with Scripture, examples from Christian history, reflections on current events, and practical application. The result is an accessible book that will help many believers to think Christianly about justice and to engage in the hard but necessary work of pursuing justice for the glory of God and the sake of authentic human flourishing."
--Nathan A. Finn, PhD, professor of faith and culture and executive director of the Institute for Faith and Culture, North Greenville University
