Inwiefern treten Literatur, Film und Kunst wortwörtlich als Seismografen ihrer Zeit auf und registrieren gesellschaftliche Auswirkungen seismischer Ereignisse? An der Schnittstelle geisteswissenschaftlicher Katastrophenforschung und literaturwissenschaftlicher Kulturtransferforschung untersucht dieses Buch 'Seismografien', die Ergebnisse diskursiver Bearbeitung weltweit wahrgenommener Erdbeben im 21. Jahrhundert am Beispiel von Ereignissen in Asien (Indonesien 2004, China 2008, Japan 2011), Europa (Italien 2009), der Karibik (Haiti 2010) und Ozeanien (Neuseeland 2011). In den sechs Kapiteln des Hauptteils wird gezeigt, wie diese lokalen Erdbebenereignisse transnational in europäische Katastrophendiskurse übertragen werden. Im Begriff der Seismografie verschränkt sich die seismografische Tätigkeit aber auch mit dem Modell der Ausbreitung und Aufzeichnung seismischer Wellen durch den Seismografen. Auf diese Weise werden Seismografien modellhaft für Ansatz und Aufgabe der Komparatistik erprobt. Diese Arbeit ist aber auch für Literaturwissenschaftler: innen allgemein sowie für Kultur-, Film- und Medienwissenschaftler: innen von Bedeutung, da sie neue Perspektiven auf die künstlerische Verarbeitung von Naturkatastrophen eröffnet.
