RACHEL WHITE SCHEUERING is a freelance writer and former field biologist. She was a contributing author on American Environmental Leaders: From Colonial Times to the Present and was a contributing author and editorial assistant on Birds of Oregon: A General Reference. She lives in Portland, Oregon.
