About the Book
Postal Inspector MC McCall is griefstruck after her partner's murder. She sneaks around investigating fruitlessly while drinking too much and shutting out all offers of help. Will a new case revitalize her? Or will she spiral into darkness?
Book Synopsis
Postal Inspector MC McCall struggles to find her footing after the murder of her partner. Nearly four months after losing Barb, MC finds it difficult to keep her distance from the investigation into Barb's death. The homicide detective in charge doesn't mince words to let MC know she needs to stay behind the yellow tape on this one and let him do his job.
MC throws herself into her own investigations-or tries to, anyway. She's often not on time to work because of too many late nights with the vodka bottle. And her supervisor makes it clear that he'd love nothing more than to force her out. MC's co-workers and close friends notice her sliding down a slippery slope. They reach out, try to throw her a lifeline, but this only pushes MC farther away so she is more hellbent on handling things alone.
Will an assignment investigating a potential drug scam along the North Shore be the ticket to keep her on track? Or will MC spiral into a personal and professional darkness from which she'll not be able to come back?
Review Quotes
"With skill and purpose, author Judy Kerr provides a truly satisfying read in Silent Service, the second installment of her MC McCall series. The novel is filled with creative language that dances off the page, storytelling that draws you into the lives and environs of its characters, and shares an immensely empathetic understanding of the ravages of loss and heartbreak." Cheryl A. Head, award-winning author of the Charlie Mack Motown Mystery Series "In Judy Kerr's stellar sophomore release, Silent Service, Kerr thrusts her beautifully flawed, all-too-human protagonist, US Postal Inspector MC McCall, into the middle of a dangerous narcotics investigation stretching from the gritty streets of St. Paul to Minnesota's snowy, windswept North Shore. MC-reeling after the murder of her beloved partner Barb just months prior-must balance her desperate obsession to find Barb's killer with maintaining a decorated, successful career she's on the cusp of losing as she attempts to bust wide open an opioid distribution ring. In turns suspense-filled, heartbreaking, and hopeful, Kerr takes the reader on a journey they'll never forget. I absolutely loved it!" Jessie Chandler, award-winning author of the Shay O'Hanlon Caper Series "Judy Kerr is a writer's writer. Her vivid depictions of characters and settings and her sparse and straightforward style are a joy to read. Silent Service is a tight, impeccably told story that grips the reader and sticks with them over time. MC McCall is a strong character who transcends the pages of the book and makes the reader anxious for more. Absolutely recommend everyone to pick up this series!" MB Panichi, author of multiple sci-fi romance novels "MC McCall is one of the best protagonists I've read in many years. She's complex, with as many flaws as positive aspects to her personality. This makes her interesting to read, because it's not possible to know with any certainty which she might do next."
EJ Kindred, author of the Annie Velasquez crime fiction series
"Reeling from a profound loss, Postal Inspector MC McCall has to pull herself together to investigate a dangerous new case. Kerr's writing is beautifully crafted and meticulously researched. Her characters are unforgettable, evoking laughter and compassion in equal measure. Silent Service will leave you turning the pages late into the night."
