The Hating Game meets Mission: Impossible in Stars and Smoke, a smoldering new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu about a superstar tapped to become a secret agent and the reluctant young spy assigned to be his partner.
Meet Winter Young--rookie backup dancer turned global pop phenomenon. His star power has smashed records, selling out stadiums from LA to London. Now he's bringing his swoon worthy assets to a whole new arena. . . Infamous criminal tycoon Eli Morrison has just one weakness--his daughter, Penelope. And Penelope has just one wish for her nineteenth birthday--a private concert with Winter Young. When covert ops organization The Panacea Group approaches Winter with this once-in-a-lifetime chance to infiltrate Morrison's inner circle, Winter must use his fame, cunning, and charisma to pull it off--only he won't be on his own. Posing as Winter's bodyguard is the fiery Sydney Cossette, Panacea's youngest spy. Sydney may be the only person alive impervious to Winter's charms, but as the mission brings them closer, she's forced to admit there's more to this A-lister than slick dance moves and a handsome face. Panacea's unlikeliest partners just might become its biggest heroes--and maybe even more--if they can survive each other first.About the Author

Stars and Smoke is another solid addition to Marie Lu's written works. Fans of her previous novels will not be disappointed by this newest series, and newcomers will be drawn in by the polar opposite main characters, tense subterfuge, and slick gadgetry employed by the Panacea group and its agents. You don't have to be a k-pop fan to appreciate Winter Young's character, a global music superstar with a wholesome vibe, supportive team of backup dancers, and yearning to find a deeper meaning in his starstruck life. Contrasted with Sydney Cossette, an undercover agent who is intent on keeping her secrets and personal history under even deeper wraps, they make a wonderfully conflicting team. When they are whisked away to London, readers are launched into a high stakes adventure filled with glamorous parties, dangerous terrorists, and billionaires with dirty secrets tucked behind their philanthropic facades.

Winter is an international pop megastar. Sydney works for a covert operative group called Panacea. When ruthless criminal tycoon Eli Morrison hires Winter for a private concert for his daughter's birthday party, Panacea recruits Winter to work alongside Sydney to gather evidence against Eli. The story is fast-paced with plenty of action, glamor, and an antagonism to attraction romance. Both Winter and Sydney must confront their respective trauma in order to relate to each other and fulfill their mission. A certain amount of suspension of disbelief is required, as it is unlikely that an operative as accomplished as Sydney would be so young, and that an agency like Panacea would recruit a popstar. The characters are both 19 years old, but the book has a YA vibe. Stars and Smoke is a fun teen thriller with some good plot twists toward the end.

International pop superstar Winter Young is recruited by an elite covert ops group to work with young spy Sydney Cossette on a mission to take down a major crime boss. Winter performs for the crime boss’s daughter at a private birthday party as Sydney poses as his bodyguard. Can the two get along and complete their mission? STARS AND SMOKE blends several genres of mystery, thriller, fantasy, and romance into a fun YA book. Going in, I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. It looked a bit cheesy and while it did in fact turn out that way, the fast pace, witty characters, and far-fetched but fun world made for an enjoyable read. Some pretty ridiculous things happened, so this is not a book to pick apart thinking about the plausibility or it will really be ruined. The ending wrapped up what occurred in the storyline but left things open for a sequel. STARS AND SMOKE was a fun and quick YA spy thriller/bodyguard romance read that I’d recommend. It is book one of Marie Lu’s Stars and Smoke series. This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I’d be interested in checking out her other works.
