Excellent Quality - But Kelp Can Negatively Alter Your Thyroid Tests & Health

I've taken Swanson's Kelp tablets (SW337) for years, with good results. Once I started taking this organic kelp powder, instead - it had a negative effect on my thyroid gland. Within a year I had bad results during my physical on my thyroid test. I just had my second thyroid test, a year later and the results are still in the high range. I'm going to throw this product out, avoid all iodine products and have my thyroid test redone in six months to see if it returns to normal, per my physician's recommendation. A friend of mine warned me about kelp decades ago and told me that this can happen. I was only taking 1/16th of a teaspoon of the kelp powder, every other day (3 times a week). It's very powerful. I read that one of the kelp oils widely available contains 8 times the recommended daily requirement for iodine. Be careful taking any of these products without discussing it with your physician, or at the very least make certain you are tested yearly for thyroid problems.

I have used Starwest's Organic Kelp Powder for several years now and am happy with its keeping me healthy, especially as it is my source for iodine and iodide--I don't need to use iodized salt. Sea vegetables have kept Japanese people healthy with their micronutrients provided by the sea. And kelp helps continue the tradition here in the States. It tastes good and mixes easily into my salads and hot dishes. And the cost is very reasonable--other forms of seaweed cost a lot more.
Good choice, give me variety

I enjoy this alternative to the tablet form. The taste is nice. I add it to smoothies, and such. I empty my Starwest items into an individual quart mason jar, and it is perfect!

I used to take kelp tablets. But now I used kelp powder, so easy to put mix into my protein shake. But for some who might might not like the fishy taste, it may not be for you.

We add this to our breakfast smoothies every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday just to be sure we get enough iodine in our diets. No complaints about the kelp taste because the cinnamon, ginger, fruits, and greens in the smoothie are so flavorful.

I wonder why it's SO bitter compared to my store-bought version ( not bitter at all) --I tried them both side by side. It's finer powder with pale-greenish color ( mine is very gray-green). It smells less fishy, the flavor is milder, lacking the usual salty taste of seaweed ( mine is very salty)....I thinks it is not as good as I expected. And it doesn't label that it's RAW. By the way, also being organic, mine comes from a very reputable local health food store, with a little higher price.

This is a great value for the amount you get, and it's good to have a more versatile powder form. I like the sheets, but they add up in price. Also, the powder is best if you just need some kelp on the go with water or need to increase assimilation. Also great in smoothies.
