The percentage of children with disabilities has increased over the last decade.
Recent estimates in the United States show that about one in six, or about 17%, of children aged 3 through 17 have one or more developmental disabilities. About 1 in 44 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.
With autism prevalence on the rise, we need to further educate ourselves and others on the importance of communication. Many parents and caregivers struggle to find resources readily available, and are hesitant to have conversations with children.
Now is the time to cultivate healthy conversations with our children about differences.
Review Quotes
"My son is on the autistic spectrum, thus this book really hit home for me. Stella, who is nonverbal, is introduced as a figure who merely wants a playmate. Even if your own child does not have this condition, the book can help you engage with and understand those who do. It is fun to read while also imparting valuable lessons. Although it is part of a series, this book can be read independently by children in preschool to early elementary. It's about 30 pages long and packed with appealing pictures that will hold kids' attention. The language used is simple enough for a kid to understand and familiar enough to feel connected to. This book serves as a reminder that despite our external differences, we are all capable of forming meaningful relationships with one another."
"I read this to my 5 year old non-verbal daughter and her siblings and she LOVED it. Her siblings made the connection between the Stella and their sister and we got to ask her if she felt some of the same things that Stella felt in the book. She has asked us to read the book several times she it arrived!"
