Wildlife biologist Alex Carter jumps at the chance to work with hawksbill turtles in Hawaii, only to face an unthinkable threat that endangers countless lives in the captivating latest entry of the acclaimed series by Alice Henderson.
Alex Carter is thrilled to be in lush, tropical Hawaii for her new assignment: to study and protect hawksbill turtles. From global warming to poaching to the simple fragility of a turtle's nest, these creatures are under constant threat. And as excited as Alex is to swim, explore, and relax, she's also ready to be these turtles' fiercest protector.
Alex looks forward to a break from the danger of her past assignments, but soon finds that environmental crime can happen anywhere, even in a Hawaiian paradise. As a massive hurricane approaches, armed thieves storm onto the beach where Alex and her volunteers are desperately trying to move turtle eggs to safety out of the storm surge.
When the gunmen take one of her volunteers hostage and Alex tracks them to a nearby paleontology museum, Alex suspects that there's more to these mysterious criminals than meets the eye and that the repercussions of their success will extend far beyond the shores of the Big Island. Whatever their treacherous plot may be, Alex must scramble to protect the turtles, her friends, and the world at large... before irreversible damage is done.
Review Quotes
"Suspenseful....Henderson's evident passion for and expertise in animal science enlivens the clever mystery plot." -- Publishers Weekly on The Vanishing Kind
"Compelling, captivating, and compulsively page-turning. Alice Henderson is a master at drawing the reader into the rugged terrain where wildlife biologist Alex Carter finds the endangered jaguar isn't the only one in the crosshairs. With a ripped from the headlines plot, The Vanishing Kind is environmental suspense at its finest." -- James L'Etoile, award-winning author of Face of Greed and River of Lies
"Henderson neatly integrates a master class on forests, caribou, and other endangered animals into Alex's suspenseful search for caribou--and for a killer. The eventual sighting of the elusive caribou, 'the gray ghosts of the forest, ' is indeed an exciting moment. Alex, who thrives on the outdoors and solitude, makes a formidable heroine, while the breathtaking scenery illustrates why a person would want to be one with nature. Environmental crime fiction doesn't get much better than this." -- Publishers Weekly on A Ghost of Caribou
"Readers who enjoy a well-paced, suspenseful thriller will give this book a thumbs up, but A Ghost of Caribou is more than that...As much as we care about Alex's fate at the hands of a killer, we also care about the animal that brought her to the mountains in the first place. There's real passion here, and that gives the novel added substance." -- Booklist
"A Solitude of Wolverines by Alice Henderson is a thriller with a heart, a riveting story of conspiracy, murder, and wilderness survival that will keep you turning the pages. Vivid characters, a pulse-pounding plot, a fascinating wildlife-conservation background, and beautifully realized settings make this an exceptional read. This is the first book in a series about wildlife biologist Alex Carter; I can't wait for the next one." -- Douglas Preston, bestselling coauthor of Relic and Crooked River
"What a treat! Alice Henderson has delivered a treasure of a novel--and, to readers' delight, a promise of more where this came from. Her depiction of the natural world in all its beauty and terror is spot-on. Into this she weaves a cast of characters both original and fascinating, as well as a heroine who does the unbelievable, yet one can believe it. A great read!" -- Nevada Barr, New York Times bestselling author, on A Solitude of Wolverines
