Q: Can you use this as an outdoor gate?

A: I have used this as an outdoor Pet Gate for at least five years without any problems. Mine is just starting to rust a tiny bit now, but it's still in overall great shape and have been through winter storms and summer heat.

A: Hi! No need to drill into the walls for use in the hallway. You can use the no-drill pressure mount system with included adhesive wall cups. If using for stairways, then you would need to drill/screw with the included hardware kit. Thanks!

Q: Out of the box, the gate will not close or latch. It seems totally warped, not just askew because when I push the gate into the latch it doesn't even catch. Is there anything I can do to fix?

A: Hi, great question and don't worry! The gate frame is angled intentionally so that when you install the gate, the frame is under pressure. Bought these gates for the grandparents' stairs (top and bottom). They are very solid and sturdy! we didn't use the side clips or screws (since not our house and don't live here) and it still is very strong. I would definitely recommend these gates! took a little bit to figure out how they work, but not too hard once you get going.

My 25 lb mini labradoodle was able to dismantle the locking mechanism after less than a dozen brief stays behind this gate. Also the slats are not far enough apart on the ends to prevent a smaller dog from sticking its head through. Would be fine for a toddler.

TLDR: Don't buy this baby gate unless you have the tension mounts from another brand Our Regalo baby gate recently broke (after less than a year of use) and I was lookign to replace it with another brand hoping to get a longer life out of it. We purchased the Summer brand gate and upon installation (after we'd torn apart the box and packaging) we realized that two of tension mount screws were damaged. Summer has made an interesting choice by using metal nuts and metal screws together. If there is any irregularity in the screw, then the metal nut can't move along the screw thus rendering the tension mount completely useless. The only reason that I was able to salvage the product is because I had saved the screws and plastic nuts from the Regalo baby gate. They weren't exactly the same width, but the plastic nut is a MUST. The plastic nuts can be rotated by hand to create the tension necessary for a tension-mounted gate to work. Using a crescent wrench on the metal nut is all but an impossible task, especially the ones on the ground. I would stay away from this brand because the design is inherently flawed. This gate seems sturdy enough and the mechanism is easy for adults to use (although this door only swings one way). I would still not recommend purchasing this gate because the liklihood that the screw/nut combination will not work is so high. No parent wants to have to schlep a torn up box and huge pieces back to Target just to try again. Save yourself the time and money and buy either the Regalo or Dream Baby brands, which both use plastic nuts. Neither gate is that long-lasting, but at least they can be assembled correctly!

I would have loved this gate if I was using it in a doorway. However, I needed to use it at the top of a staircase between two posts in my railing. Everything seemed fine during installation until we got to the part where we had to tighten the pressure to get the door lined up so it would latch. When tightened appropriately, the extreme pressure forced our very sturdy wooden railing to lean out! In the photo, we had loosened the pressure in an attempt to fix the leaning railing, but it prevented the door from latching. Sadly, we cannot use this gate. For our situation, we need to find a gate that does not rely on pressure in order to latch. I’m leaving this review as a warning that if your staircase requires you to install the gate so that it’s pressing a railing away, it might not work for you too.

My senior dog had surgery and had to be separated from our other dog. The gate works well and was easy to assemble. The only issue we have is that it will pop open if enough pressure is pushed against it. My senior dog has pushed through it a couple of times. I have had to put an extra latch on it to keep it secure. I would recommend it if the latch had a secure lock. I could not change 5-star rating. I would not trust this with small children.
