Great Book that Shows a Positive Grandparent and Grandchild Relationship

The Blue Pickup is a sweet story of a young Jamaican girl bonding with her granddad while he teaches her how to fix old cars in his garage. I love how the interactions between the granddad and his granddaughter combine learning new skills with sharing family stories and the unique aspects of Jamaican culture. I also like how the granddad encourages his granddaughter and affirms her ability to identify and solve problems to fix the different cars. A central theme of this book is that although something is old, it doesn't mean it isn't valuable and worth caring for, which is such an important message that is needed today. Working on the blue pickup helps them to remember the elderly neighbors in their community and their country's rich history. I love the positive and upbeat tone of this book and the rhythmic onomatopoeia interspersed throughout that make it fun to read aloud. I am grateful to the publisher for an advanced reader copy of this book. All my opinions are my own.

I just read this book and I love it so much. I loved the family, cultural, and community dynamics, and the hands-on aspects of the book. My dad restored a ‘36 Dodge pickup that my middle son is obsessed with. This was the perfect story for both of them.
