Book Synopsis

"Mallery is an expert at writing about strong women, their friendships, and their romances." --Booklist

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery--a story of friends who become family, giving each other courage to start over...

When fate brings three strangers to a charming space for lease on the California coast, the Boardwalk Bookshop is born. Part bookstore, part gift shop, part bakery, it's a dream come true for Bree, Mikki and Ashley. But while their business is thriving, their personal lives are...not.

Bree, wounded by brilliant but cold parents and her late husband's ultimate betrayal, has sworn to protect her heart at all costs. Even from Ashley's brother, a writer and adventurer who has inspired millions. He's the first man to see past Bree's barricades to her true self, which terrifies her. Mikki has this divorce thing all figured out--somehow, she's stayed friends with her ex and her in-laws...until a new man changes how everyone looks at her, and how she sees herself. Meanwhile, Ashley discovers that the love of her life never intends to marry. Can she live without being a wife if it means she can have everything else she's ever wanted?

At sunset every Friday on the beach in front of the Boardwalk Bookshop, the three friends share a champagne toast. As their bond grows closer, they challenge one another to become the best versions of themselves in this heartachingly beautiful story of friendship, sisterhood and the transformative power of love.

Three women, at different places in their lives, with different life experiences, and totally different skill sets, come together in the perfect shop on the beach to fuse their entrepreneurial skills! What follows are the stories of each of these women as they become friends and move forward with their lives. Bree, bookstore owner and a bit commitment phobic. Mikki, divorced gift-shop owner who is happy with her life. Ashley, baker extraordinaire, with a boyfriend and looking forward to more. The Boardwalk Bookshop takes us on a journey with each of these women as they move towards the next stages in their lives. I loved the friendships that Bree, Mikki, and Ashley form when they come together to share their hopes and dreams; for the business and in their personal lives. Learning from each other, they're allowed to grow and change. This book calls for a quiet spot, a glass of your favorite beverage, a few snacks, and the time to savor the story. Loved it.

Bree, Mikki and Ashley are strangers turned business partners/co-tenants turned wonderful friends. Each at a different place in their lives they have their own challenges building and maintaining relationships. Bree was tragically neglected by her parents and used by her husband leaving her unwilling to open her heart. Mikki has raised two kids with an ex-husband she has maintained as a friend, but now longs for the next chapter. And Ashley has everything she wants including a loving relationship. It’s just missing one critical thing… The prevailing story is really about these wonderful women and how they support and cheer each other on. This is a wonderfully lighthearted, easy read that is ready to take on you next vacation.

What happens when your friends "get" yoo?

The Boardwalk Bookshop was an intriguing book. The 3 owners were so different that I had to make a table of attributes, so I didn’t miss the finer points of the individuals. The three became friends and really had each other’s backs. When their lives get uncomfortable and messy, they each find that their friends tell them the truth even when it hurt. When you realize that your dream really isn’t doing to make you happy, what do you do? When you prefer to be isolated because you at least understand the pain, how do you change? When you are stuck in a rut that you didn’t even know about, how do you get out? These ladies all find themselves struggling with who thy want to be and how to get there. The friendship they had developed was deeper than any of them thought until they needed help. We all should be so lucky to have friends like this.

It was almost 20 years ago (two decades!!!) that I found a few used Susan Mallery books and I have been hooked ever since. Susan is amazing at bringing you completely into the story and lives of her characters. I can always picture the characters and can usually relate to at least one, if not more. Bree was that character for me in this book. Due to past hurt she refuses to let anyone get close to her. She is so afraid of hurt she has turned off most of her emotions until she meets Harding. I can relate to her as it is very hard for me to let people in. To trust them. And give myself to them! This is a great summer (or really any time) read! You’ll love following along with the three main characters as they all navigate new areas in their lives!

As usual Ms Mallery has written another super fantastic book. Once you start reading time passes without notice as you are so engrossed in the story. When I finish reading one of her books I always think there is no way she can do a better one and I am always wrong. i so look forward to her books whether part of a series or a stand-alone.

Susan Mallery has written a wonderful book about many different relationships. Strong women of various ages all working together and caring for one another. The three main characters are all at different stages in their lives, each working through different life lessons. They all help one another, along with the occasional help from mothers/mothers in law. I really enjoy Susan Mallery's books and the characters she writes about. They are all truly believable and you can put yourself in their shoes at one point or another. You will love this book as it makes you laugh and cry while telling a beautiful story.

A nice summer read by Susan Mallery. 3 business women shared rental space for their businesses so it would be more affordable for each of them. They became best friends. They have each other’s backs no matter what. They look out for each other’s best interests. The story weaves through their very different lives. I recommend reading this book.

The Boardwalk Bookshop by Susan Mallery takes us to a store on the beach that houses a bookshop, gift shop, and muffin shop. Three women have come together to lease the space. You can pick up a snack, a book, and beach towel plus a cute tote bag to hold everything all in one charming shop. We get to meet Bree, Ashley, and Mikki. Their business is booming, but their personal lives are not. Bree is determined to not let anyone get close to her. She has casual flings, but she does not do relationships. Bree has a rule to not date authors. Then she meets Ashley’s author brother, Harding. He can see past the barricades Bree has erected. This terrifies Bree, but she finds herself drawn to Harding. Ashley has been dating Seth for over a year. She is wondering when he is going to pop the question. When Ashley learns that Seth has no intention of proposing, she must decide if she can be happy without a ring. Mikki has been divorced for three years. She is still friends with her ex-husband as they co-parent their two children. Mikki has not dated since the divorce, and she has Earl (her battery-operated pleasure device) to take care of her needs. But then a man enters Mikki’s life that has, and her ex-husband is interested in reconciliation. We get to see three strangers come together as business partners, friends, and family. We follow the women on their journey as they grew as individuals and in their friendship. I believe women will relate to the characters and their issues. I enjoyed the descriptions of the lady’s unique store. They each managed to put their own spin on their spaces while making it cohesive as a whole. I found the book to move along at snail’s pace and I thought the book was way too long (the story could have easily lost over a hundred pages). The transitions were jarring as we jumped between the three women (go from woman to woman in the same chapter). I got tired of Bree and her issues early on. I found many details to be repetitive (about all three women). I did not find the characters to be unique. They are similar to other Susan Mallery characters. There is foul language as well an intimate situations in the book including references to women’s personal pleasure devices (I do not wish to read about women naming their devices or their bedroom antics). The ending is nice, but I wish there had been an epilogue so we could see how the characters are faring in the future. It was interesting learning about the different champagnes and sparkling wines. The three women tried something different each Friday after work as they enjoyed watching the sunset on the beach. There is a recipe for red, white, and blue muffins at the end of the book along with discussion questions and a preview of Home Sweet Christmas (Susan Mallery’s next book). The Boardwalk Bookshop is beach book with a busy bookshop, mouthwatering muffins, an attractive author, chilled champagne, a sad sack, firm friends, and relationship woes.

The Boardwalk Bookshop is about Ashley, Bree, and Mikki and their dream of owning a beachfront business. Ashley is the baker of the group and has converted her portion of the building to selling muffins. Bree has used her portion to sell books and have signings with authors. Mikki has used her portion in a gift shop where she sells trinkets. Each had their eye set on this building but the cost was too high, so they came together and quickly became close friends/family. On Friday nights, the ladies get together on the beach and have champagne together at sunset. This story is full of laughter, heartache, and romance. Despite everything they are going through each of these friends is there to support and encourage each other. The honesty they have towards each other even when it hurts was something I truly appreciated in this book the most. Ashley, Bree, and Mikki's quest for love and success will keep you on the edge of your seats. I highly recommend reading this book!

Another great read by Susan Mallery. This is a story about three very different women who become friends and form a bond more like family. Bree is hurt and angry and won’t allow herself to love anyone. Mikki is still extremely close to her ex husband and won’t put herself out there to find a new someone special. Ashley is head over heels in love with her boyfriend, but then finds out that he never wants to get married. It was fun watching each of these ladies grow and learn how to navigate their lives as each of them goes through the trials and tribulations of dating. Mikki’s mother and ex mother-in-law keep the story interesting and fun.

Mixed feeling about this book

3 out of 5 stars
CH - 6 months ago
SPOILER ALERT! I loved the idea of the book but sadly most of the characters seemed lacking to me. Ashley/Seth/Dave-I really liked the relationship that Ashley and Seth had but also completely understand that they just wanted different things and love doesn't fix everything. My issue with this grouping started with Dave. Ashley was supposed to be so heart broken over the loss of the love of her life but seemed to be enjoying the interest of Dave way too soon for my liking. Bree/Harding-I was never able to get behind this couple. It just always seemed off to me. From the instant he started showing interest in her it seemed to just be because his sister had warned him away from her. I just never felt a true connection. Mikki/Perry/Duane-This is the relationship I liked the most and felt was the most real. These characters are what saved the book for me. Perry definitely seemed like he had changed and wanted to revive his marriage but too much time and too much past hurt for that. Duane seemed like the perfect fit and at the right time.

The Boardwalk Bookshop is about the type of business friendship that an entrepreneur always hopes to find. Three strangers who come together to create something bigger than each of them can create alone. And Susan Mallery is the master of healthy relationships. If people would use her books as instructions manuals, so many more people and families would be happy and complete. If Mallery can envision it, why can’t people live it? Another wonderful example of how families should come together and thrive. I’m still coming to terms with the current trend for authors to shun commas. Oh how I miss the poor comma.

A great beach read that will keep you entertained through all the drama, romance and champagne drinking! 3 women, Bree, Mikki and Ashley, who were once strangers, meet each other all vying for the same beach store front. With all 3 showing up and discussing how expensive the rent is, they decide to combine the bookstore with the gift shop and muffin business into one and call it The Boardwalk Bookshop. Will they be able to pull off their joint venture? Each come with their own baggage, but with the parternship with their new store, they form a friendship! Will they be able to help each other through all their troubles? I love how Susan Mallery often writes books that focus women friendships and how they help and support one another! Loved the champagne guide and muffin recipe! Perfect for book clubs!
