Description
Book Synopsis
An exciting middle grade adventure about a missing child, some dangerous fairies and two intrepid children. Since Alfred and Saga put a stop to the mayor's motorway and saved the land of Faerie everything has been a bit quiet. Too quiet, for Saga. All she wants is to go back to the mystical world they discovered, but for some reason Alfred can't stay far enough away...But when Mayor Underwood announces a new construction project, the Faerie world yet again comes under threat and Alfred must journey deeper into the magical land than ever before. As her friend is whisked away to a place where she cannot follow, Saga has her own mystery to unravel - the disappearance of a child 12 years ago. Saga is sure that the truth of this event could be the key to everything, but what if its secret lies in the one place she cannot go?
In this thrilling sequel to H.S. Norup's Into The Faerie Hill, it is yet again up to Alfred and Saga to save the natural world. As ever, Mayor Underwood's plans for expansion endanger the fine balance between the mortal world and the Land of Faerie, and this time, the faeries are preparing to fight. Can Alfred and Saga restore the peace between the two worlds and uncover the mystery of the lost child, or will the faeries bring devasatation upon the human land?
The Changeling Child is a stunningly imaginative book where fantasy mingles with the everyday. Filled with magic, it is a beautiful story about the importance of friendship and of believing in yourself.
Review Quotes
"Fairy magic and family issues come together in this absorbing adventure."
--Kirkus Reviews "The Changeling Child is a great sequel, with heart, and marvels galore - moth magic! - which leaves more treasures to come as the series develops. This one body can't wait"
--Thomas Taylor, author of Malamander "The Changeling Child is a magical ticket bringing us back to the unforgettable and enchanting world of Faerie Hill where young environmental activist, Saga, and her best friend Alfred face yet another challenge to solve a daring yet delicate mystery and protect not only the land, but friendships, faeries and family too. In a story where, at the blink of an eye, whimsy can morph into wickedness, be prepared to lose track of time and dust glitter from your mind long after you've turned the last page."
--Eve McDonnell, author of The Last Boy "I'd have loved these stories as a child. I love them now! I particularly love the interwoven magic and friendship and family backgrounds, and the overlapping of the real world and the faerie world. The fantastical faeries and their problems seem so grounded in our flawed human world. The environmental message is there on every page, but never preaching or dominating"
--Hilary McKay, author of The Skylarks War "Always a joy to read a new H.S. Norup. The Changeling Child is a return to Alfred and Saga, the characters we met in Into the Faerie Hill. It's a deeper dive into the faerie kingdom, with past secrets, which ripple out into both realms. Bewitching and beautiful, with lots of messages about how we protect special places, and people. Loved it!"
--Nicola Penfold, author of Where the World turns Wild "What starts as a small scale adventure to save a local beauty spot opens out onto perilous realms and deep family history, all the while remaining warm hearted and empowering"
--Julia Golding, author of the Cat Royal series "Full of folkloric magic and dark fairylore! I loved this follow up book to Into The Faerie Hill. It weaves our oldest, darkest fairy-lore, in which the Faerie folk are certainly not sweet and glittery, and their moral codes are very different to our own, with conspiracy preoccupations about the environment and our disruption of the natural landscape"
--Tamsin Rosewell, author of The Seamaiden's Odyssey "Rich, evocative, exciting, and fun, The Changeling Child has magic in every word - plus the brilliant Mr Tumbleweed! A wonderfully unique take on faeries, changelings, and magical realms, a vital reminder of the importance of the natural world, and a truly great story, it's one not to be missed"
--Sinéad O'Hart, author of The Eye of the North "A gripping and enchanting story with dangerous faeries, magical friendships and a mystery surrounding a missing child. Beautifully written and richly imagined as always"
Rashmi Sirdeshpande, author of Dadaji's Paintbrush "Overall, a solid second installment for readers who enjoyed the first in the series."
--Children's Literature
