Fourteen-year-old Maggie and her eccentric family harvest crops that alter emotions, but their centuries-old agricultural secret and magical dinner parties come under threat when a mysterious stranger moves to town.Book Synopsis
Get ready for a middle grade novel steeped in magic that you won't want to miss!
For fourteen-year-old Magnolia Gartner, nothing is more important than tradition, and the most important traditions in her eccentric family are the magical dinner parties they've been hosting for generations. Anyone lucky enough to have dined at the Gartner's estate in Humble Hollow will claim the meal was life-changing, and that's true -- because the crops the family harvests and the dishes they prepare have the power to alter the emotions, and fortunes, of anyone who eats them.
Review Quotes
"In this page-turning story, Leavitt adroitly balances comedic and poignant elements, classical allusions, and contemporary diversions. . .Richly detailed and imagined; will invite repeat visits to harvest all the delights." -Kirkus, starred review
" This middle grade novel is quirky in the very best sense of the word, and Lindsey Leavitt's writing is imaginative, wry, and full of heart." -Lit Hub "The spellbinding story expertly mixes magic with mystery, and the eccentric family, zany town traditions, and local folklore are a delight. Neurodivergent characters, including Maggie herself, are a welcome inclusion, and the inventive magic system feels particularly fresh. An incredibly creative consideration of what it takes to make and maintain a community. " -BooklistAbout the Author
Lindsey Leavitt enthusiastically picked New Jersey for her state report in the fifth grade. Lindsey grew up in the Las Vegas desert, so visiting her aunt and uncle in "the garden state" was absolute magic (and still is). Now Lindsey lives in the Utah mountains, where she co-owns an independent bookstore, Folklore Books. There's a small vegetable patch in her backyard, but Lindsey's not great at gardening (besides chives. She's QUEEN of chives). Find out more about Lindsey and her many kid-lit books on her website.
