Will Helping a House Guest Hurt Alyssa?

4 out of 5 stars
Alyssa Macallan’s life is turned upside down when her husband walks out of their house one day. Facing a divorce she never expected, she finds herself drinking at a bar one Friday night, where she meets Bree Lorrance, who is also down on her luck. The two hit it off, and Alyssa invites Bree to move into her guest house. Helping Bree lets Alyssa forget her own problems, until her own problems heat back up. Will the two be able to help each other? Or do they have secret agendas? I was hooked early on, although the book does take a little while to build up to the full plot. Once it does, I couldn’t wait to see how things would resolve for the characters. I appreciated the fact that no one seemed overly whiney here, although they could have repeated things less, giving the book more time to flesh out some of the late breaking twists. While knowing I couldn’t fully trust Alyssa and Bree, I really did like them both and hoped things would work out well for them. We get the book completely from Alyssa’s third person point of view which makes us question just what anyone else was thinking. Even with the pacing issues with the plot, I enjoyed this book overall.

I received this book as an ARC with no expectation of a positive review. Alyssa fell in love with the handsome, rich Bill Macallen. She knew he was a fundraiser. One minute she is happily married, the next minute he leaves with no explanation. She goes to a bar and meets Bree. Do you really know who friends? Who can you trust? When you think you know, it may not be the truth. This book is a twisty story that will have you guessing until the end. It is a must read.

BRILLIANT CAT-AND-MOUSE THRILLER!

Multiple Award Winner Hank Phillipi Ryan’s fans will be thrilled with her latest release, a brilliant cat-and-mouse thriller, The House Guest. In my opinion, this is Ryan’s best work to date and is my personal favorite of all of her novels. From the first paragraph, Ryan draws readers into this intricately woven story of divorce, division, and deception. Because with every divorce, there is division–a division of money, property, and friends, which typically leads to deception. And Ryan has loaded this novel with deception! Readers will enjoy trying to determine which character to believe amid all the deception—the wife who claims she was caught off guard by her husband's request for a divorce, the husband whose personality began changing in the weeks before he left, the new friend the wife makes who suddenly finds herself an heiress, the attorney who was sent to find the heiress but nearly scared her to death and now has become their friend, an FBI Agent investigating the soon-to-be ex-husband, and the wife’s former law school friend. Here is the Big Question: Will anyone have possession of the millions of dollars at stake when all is said and done? Brilliant cat-and-mouse thriller from beginning to end! I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Forge Books and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.

Twisted Domestic Suspense with a Surprise Ending

First, let me give you some honest advice. Run, don’t walk to get this book! Second piece of advice, don’t believe anything you read until the very end and then you can shake your head in disbelief at how brilliantly everything comes together. This is the most deliciously twisted book that I have read in a long time and so enticingly deceptive. Alyssa Macallen is living alone after her husband Bill left her. He has plenty of money and she is expecting to be poor any day now. When she meets Bree Lorrance, another put upon female who has been wronged by the male in her life, the two of them click and Bree becomes Alyssa’s house guest. Then, the twists and the labyrinth maze that was the plot begin to really get complex and oh so well written! This fantastically engrossing novel included characters that were just as deceptive as the plot and so devilishly realistic. There were clues and red herrings, but they were so well woven into the plot that I could not figure out who was bad and who was good in the story. The design of the author to trap me in the mousetrap of deceit worked well and thoroughly captivated me. I thought I was on a runaway train, down a mountainous track with switchbacks at every intersection. This book was totally engaging, with characters that popped with credibility and a plot that captured my mind and imagination with awe and wonder about what would happen next. This is a diabolically and cleverly written domestic thriller that gripped me from beginning to end and fooled me all along the way. Loved it!
