Review Quotes
"This clinical handbook is an absolute must-read for all lactation professionals seeking to elevate their practice and provide holistic support to postpartum mothers. It offers insight far more complex and nuanced than traditional perinatal mental health texts, and helps providers recognize unique symptoms of distress in this patient population. Hilary Waller and Karen Kleiman utilize decades of combined clinical experience to explain the biological and cultural reasons why so many women suffer in silence, and offer guidance on creating a safe space for patients to verbalize their deepest fears. The Perinatal Patient includes worksheets for mothers on pain, rage, insomnia, identity changes, ruminations and obsessions, and countless other topics. For providers, it highlights relevant clinical pearls such as physical symptoms of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, holding rather than fixing, and gaining patient trust. Overall, this is an invaluable and immediately available tool for work in the lactation field, one that will change the way we understand and care for our breastfeeding patients."
