Book Synopsis
The rules of summer book club are simple:- No sad books
- No pressure
- Yessssss, wine!
Besties Laurel and Paris are excited to welcome Cassie to the group. This year, the book club is all about fill-your-heart reads, an escape from the chaos of the everyday--running a business, raising a family, juggling a hundred to-dos. Even the dog is demanding (but the bestest boy).
Since Laurel's divorce, she feels like the Worst Mom Ever. Her skepticism of men may have scarred her vulnerable daughters. Cassie has an unfortunate habit of falling for ridiculous man-boys who dump her once she fixes them. Paris knows good men exist. She's still reeling after chasing off the only one brave enough--and foolish enough--to marry her.
Inspired by the heroines who risk everything for fulfillment, Laurel, Paris and Cassie begin to take chances--big chances--in life, in love. Facing an unwritten chapter can be terrifying. But it can be exhilarating, too, if only they can find the courage to change.

This was a great story. It was a bit of a HEA but thats ok, because it worked! And I really related to the one character in the way that she was helping her family, but kind of forgot about herself
Such a great read!

Another well-written Women's Fiction with a touch of romance by the wonderful Susan Mallery. The story is about three friends, Paris, Laurel, and Cassidy. They are very likable but flawed in realistic ways. Each of the three women has a heartfelt journey of self-awareness and growth. The book includes several interesting secondary characters to round out the families and romance. Add in a summer book club and what's not to like? I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, it's earned a spot on my "keeper" shelf.

Susan Mallery is a master of family relationships. I can relate to every one of her characters, just in different ways and at different times. I love the theme of found family that develops through the Book Club. You can't change others; you can only change yourself. So build a family that loves and supports you, and the rest will follow in its own time.

The Summer Book Club is about reading only happy, feel good books! Susan Mallery always writes the best characters and in this book we have Laurel and Paris who have been friends for years along with Cassie who just recently moved to their town in California. Each of the women have had trouble with relationships in the past and have to learn to trust again. A great story about support we get from female friends and having a book club sure doesn't hurt!!!! Highly recommend!

The Summer Book Club follows a group of friends who have made or are making major changes in their lives. Life has not always been kind to the women, and they have found they need to change things about themselves to go on with life. I love how Mallery finds way to show us how to reach out to new people, and to let us know even in times of trouble, we can improve our situation and move on. Friends and family are so important to how we handle tough times. This book shows that new friends can become family. Another great book by Mallery.
A delightful summer read!

A delightful summer read! I felt such empathy for each heroine as they tried to reconcile their pasts and their hopes for their futures. Laurel, Paris, and Cassie, each, have their own strengths and weaknesses. They all have great storylines and show excellent character growth.
Great Summer Read! or for Anytime!

Susan Mallery is one of my writing icons. Not only is she prolific, putting out several books a year, but the books are (darn her) all so good and so different. I understand that it takes a great deal of discipline to build a career like Mallery’s and it’s also apparent I don’t have that particular work ethic/talent/entrepreneurial gene. That’s okay. It just means I get to appreciate Mallery and other writers like her. Mallery’s latest book released Feb. 13, THE SUMMER BOOK CLUB. It’s full of the kind of layering and foreshadowing and depth I love. As Laurel, Paris, and Cassie read their summer books (this year it’s romances from the 1980s), they also work through their man-issues and they learn about themselves and their relationships. At the beginning, Laurel believes that all men will let her down. Paris believes she’s incapable of mature love. Cassie believes a man wouldn’t be interested in her for herself, only for what she can do for him. All three women learn they were oh, so wrong. I enjoyed this book, light enough for the beach, but with enough meat on its bones to make a great book club discussion. Especially with a glass of rose’. I loved how each character grew, then failed, then grew some more, and prevailed. The male characters aren’t caricatures, but feel like real, living humans. I highly recommend THE SUMMER BOOK CLUB for anytime of year. (Content: Closed door. Some language.) ------------------------ I received a free advance copy of this book from the publisher, but it did not induce me to review the book, favorably or otherwise.

I enjoyed this book. Laurel & Paris have been friends since they were kids. They’ve been thru thick and thin. They befriended Cassie when she was new in town. They invited her to join their book club. They became a “family” and were able to depend on each other. All 3 were forced to grow and change their lives for the better. Change was a very good thing for each of them. I recommend this book. It was a light hearted easy read that will make you think about your own friendships. I would love to see a sequel and what happens to the characters especially Cassie.

If I love something I tend to talk about it and post about it. When people ask me what genre Susan Mallery writes I always says “well they have a romantic aspect to them but the last few years her books have been more about women’s friendships. Women who build each other up instead of tearing each other down.” That is the first thing that comes to mind for The Summer Book Club. Paris and Laurel have been friends for years when they meet Cassie, who is new to town. Anyone who has moved across the country knows how hard it is to make new friends, especially those who are trustworthy and there for you! This book reminds you that you can be successful and also support other women. I was lucky enough to FINALLY get to meet Susan Mallery on the release day of this book and she said that when she’s creating a character she has to like them. She has to want to be friends with them. And I think that is why the characters in her books are always so relatable. And why I can see parts of myself in so many of them! Get yourself this book and send one to your friend as a surprise so you can read it together!

I always get a shiver of delight as I open a Susan Mallery book. I know the story will be delightful, the characters charming, and the whole experience will be like a warm blanket on a cold day. The Summer Book Club is no exception. This book discusses, single parenthood and feeling inadequate for your children, parental abuse that has caused lasting problems for interpersonal relationships, and losing your parents at an early age leaving you feeling like you have to help everyone to keep them safe. We get to watch each character as their eyes are opened to their flaws and how they work to become better people for themselves and for the ones they love. There is romance, there is kindness, there is awakening, and of course, there is a clueless ex-husband. Readers can count of this author to make sure that no matter what the issues are within the book, there will always be a happily every after. That's something we all need and something I love about Susan Mallery books. Take some time for yourself, snuggle down in your favorite reading location, pour a beverage of your choice and grab a few snacks, then relax and enjoy this book.

As always, the first page of a Susan Mallery book captivates me and I don't want to put it down. She manages to encompass romance, family and friendship in her books so that at the end of the book you only want more!!! I'm in my 83rd year and I think I've read most, if not all, of her books and I hope to be around many additional years to read more of her books. You'll truly love this book folks.

Another captivating book by Susan Mallery! It is a story of the friendship among three women, Paris, Laurel, and Cassie and their romances. The women are all in a book club together, but the book is so much more. It shows the way each woman is there for each other. Each one has to learn to trust in themselves and their feelings. This is a feel-good novel from start to finish! The story is so great, and I truly enjoyed reading it! You don't want to miss this novel!!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Susan Mallery for review purposes. This did not sway my opinion in any way. The book is mainly about three women, Laurel, Paris and Cassie. They each have issues they are trying to cope with. They rely on each other for support while hashing out these issues and have each other's backs. I enjoyed this book immensely and did not want it to end. I liked all the characters and secondary characters, especially the kids. My favorite, though, was Bandit the dog! I wish I could have a Bandit of my own. Made me want to know them personally. I was able to relate to each story line and they merged well between the three of them. I was able to relate to Paris the most due to having issues with a verbally and emotionally abusive mother myself. I did not develop the anger issues that Paris did, but I did develop severe anxiety and depression. I completely understood her emotional instability issues, especially the fear of repeating the issues and not wanting children (should she have them) to suffer from those issues. I was so proud of her for taking personal accounability. She really worked hard at solving her issues, even if she was too hard on herself at times. I was also proud of the girls, Jagger and Ariana, for standing up to their father with regard to his absenteeism and the way he was treating them. I really enjoyed the book club aspect of reading the 80's romances. It brought back some books and authors I forgot about like LaVyrle Spencer. She was a favorite along with Patricia Matthews. I have read so many books over the years that I have a hard time remembering all the authors and titles. I loved the idea of having a man join the book club and hearing his perspective with regard to the romance books. I think it would be interesting to have men read romance novels and get their take on the different romance books. I don't know any men that read romance books, but I think there would be a lot of laughs involved and maybe “give me a break” moments. Maybe more men should start writing them! I only know of one. I also enjoyed all the men characters in the book, except for Beau because of the way he treated his family, and liked the the town setting, Los Lobos. I enjoyed getting to know all of the story lines and characters, how they coped, and the personal changes that took place, and was pleased with the way their stories ended. This was my favorite Susan Mallery book so far. I really did not want to put it down but then chastised myself for not having “savored it more slowly” so to speak. It kind of left me thinking about the future of the characters. Does Beau change his ways? Did Paris eventually have children of her own? I give this book 5 stars and will definitely recommend it to others.

The Summer Book Club is a heartwarming story of three friends who experience life in their own ways but are truly there for each other as friends. Paris and Laural have been best friends since they were seven years old. Paris, who owns a farm stand, and Laural, who buys from thrift stores and auctions to resell items, have been by each other's side through not only their divorces but also in rebuilding their lives. Cassie, who was forced to move to Los Lobos to not only learn about her inheritance but also to experience life on her own, is feeling alone and lost. Paris and Laural invite Cassie to their book club. All three have not only met the loves of their life throughout this heartwarming and inspiring book, but they have also grown as individuals. The ONLY thing I did not like about this book is that it ended. I would love to see where the ladies' life evolves too. Susan, Please come out with more series.

What started as adding a new person to the summer book club became a new family member. Cassie is new in town and has found a couple of gals to hang out with, Paris and Laurel. Cassie finds more on her newly inherited land than she bargained for, but he is not hard on the eyes. Paris is busy minding her farm stand when her ex-husband of ten years and son shows up unexpectedly. What do you do when you still love him? Laurel’s oldest daughter “hates men” and mom has got to find a “friend”, a real friend, to show her girls that not all men run out like her dad did. What starts out to have a good male role model around, may end up to being the best thing for more than just the kids. Together they walk through a mine field of emotions and man issues. These ladies are having great time at “book club”! Join them.
Susan Mallery sure makes you think.

Laurel, Paris, and Cassie are the friends you want to have, both in good times when celebrating is called for, and in not-so-good times when a b_tt-kicking is appropriate. Each of these ladies comes to terms with herself, with “exes” and “currents,” and with life as life is meant to be lived. I think I’ll go and “put myself out there” a bit (or a LOT!) more. Thank you, Susan Mallery, for making me want to be better, too!

Laurel and Paris have been best friends since childhood. Cassie is new to town and meets the two of them when they met where she works for their book club. Before long she is member of their book club and renting a apartment from Laurel. Each of them have their own problems with family, relationships and love. Through it all they each support and offer encouragement to each other. I love this book. This is the perfect book to read on the beach or by the pool.

Ahhh! That is the sigh of total happiness and contentment I feel after finishing a new Susan Mallery book. This novel is friendships, relationships with men and life lessons all rolled into a very satisfying bundle. The story of three women with different challenges in their lives dovetails together beautifully under the hand of an author who knows her craft well and writes with humor and heart. The weaving together of their lives was a wonderful tapestry, and quite a work to behold when it was all finished at the end. The stories of Cassie, a homesick young woman from Maine, Laurel, a divorced single mom, and Paris, a woman who doesn’t trust her own emotional stability, are all focused in the idyllic setting of a small town in California named Los Lobos. Cassie has to learn how to live on her own without feeling as though she is disappointing her family or not needed. Laurel has to understand that she is lovable and not everyone runs away, and Paris has to learn the lesson that one can change in life and be better for it. I loved the story and the fast pace as the POV seamlessly switched between the three main characters. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each one, complete with realistic flaws and real-life problems. Laurel’s children were portrayed in such a way that my heart went out to them and their dilemma with loving an absentee father. I enjoyed getting to know the secondary characters, too and think that each one added to the depth of the story. This is one of my favorite books by the very talented Susan Mallery because of its exploration of difficult topics like facing your fears and accepting changes. I am sorry to finish the story of these three brave woman who face obstacles and have to work hard to overcome them and be their best selves. Wonderful story! Great romance! Fantastic life lessons, too! This book is the real deal, a book that gave me all of the right feels and kept me reading until I finished it. Then I sighed because I didn’t want it to end!
