A: Yes, the cartridges can be used when needed. If you are going to use the repellent intermittently during the season, you can leave the repellent cartridge in the repeller. If you are not going to use the repellent for more than 1 month or more, we would recommend taking the cartridge out, put the cap back on the repellent cartridge and store in a dry place. Once you turn off your repeller it will stop using the repellent and when the repeller is on it starts using the repellent.

Q: We bought this, and it's magic. But. I bought the 36 hour refill and have only used it an hour, but when I went to take the lid off after storage, the wick broke off. Is all lost!?

Works but Repellant cartridge doesn't last
After my initial one, thought something was wrong so with replacement cartridge, I timed it each evening. Basically, its all gone in 6-8 hours, nowhere near the stated time. This makes it impractical to use on an ongoing basis from a cost perspective.

Evaporates without use... continuously putting the blue cap back on is the only way to preserve it; I feel like most people are not even saving it for re-use. It's better if you use it daily.

Didn't work for me
I used this in my car for a drive in movie and it didn’t work. I got no less than 10 bites. The next few days were terrible! The manufacturer is sending me a refund for the purchase price.

Five star repellent, zero star environmentally
As a repellent, I have found the Thermacell very effective, however the liquid in the cartridges evaporates quickly, without use, and the plastic cartridge waste is absurd in this day and age. Recycling is not the answer, refilling is.

Refill, lost all the liquide in storage
I took my machine to use it and saw that all the liquide in the machine (refill) is lost. And I have a friend that the same happen….. at the cost of the refill is …. This is crazy

Works great. Hate the throwaway plastic.
This is very effective, but I use it sparingly because I hate throwing the empty cartridges in the trash. We just don't need more plastic waste, and it would seem that these cartridges could be easily refilled. I'd happily pay for bulk refill liquid and whatever refill apparatus if any is required. From me personally, your revenues would increase (I'd use it much more often) and your company would get some well justified environmental cred.

Worsening quality
The quality of the refills has diminished since I purchased this product over a year ago. It is still effective, however, in no way does it last as long as they advertise. Recently, it has not lasted half as long. I’m not sure if there has been a change in the solution but it is not what it used to be in duration. The refills are definitely overpriced. In addition, there should be a bottle to refill cartridges with in order to throw away less plastic. Thermacell can do better.

Awful, defective product
I was never even able to use the product, because it is so defective and poorly made. Before I could even use it the first time, it turned on while charging and the entire cartridge was spent in my bedroom. I bought a second refill, and the entire thing leaked all over my bag (which contained only sweaters, nothing hard or sharp that could have broken anything, and I kept it in the original box to ensure no damage). Don’t waste your money - you won’t even be able to use the product.

Throw away refills, really !!!
HI, just purchased your product which works very well.... BUt I am very disappointed with the fact that you have a heavy plastic throw away refill cartrige system. should I have lnow this, I will not have purchased. In these times where plastic polutions is really a major wordwide problem. a simple solution would be to sell a bottle of your repelent which would be used to fill the cartridge , and not throw away the cartrige every time..! common guys really !!

Currently, all new packaging is created with 80-100% post-consumer content and repellent cartridges in our rechargeable platform uses 68% less plastic on a per hour basis compared to earlier products. This is a great start, but we realize we still have some work to do to reach our sustainability goal. As a company we are actively researching recycling solutions, and understand the importance of achieving this goal not only for our company but for the environment.

Leaky cartridges
It's ok. Cartridges leak so there is definitely no chance of getting your moneys worth. Coverage zone is much smaller than advertised. Maybe the other stuff they sell works better, I don't know.
