The star is for the look of the socks. They are very cute. The quality is poor! As soon as we put the socks on our children, there was a hole. By the time she took them off, there were holes in both socks. They don't last at all.

I bought these as a stocking stuffer for my 4 year old son and he has probably only worn them twice and has already torn a hole in both feet in this pair. It's only like 2 weeks after opening them. Poor quality if your kiddo is active and does lots of running around in socks.
