About the Book

The first anthology to bring together Anglophone transatlantic writing across the period of the long nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis

This anthology provides a single, convenient volume of diverse primary texts supporting the teaching and research field of Anglophone Transatlantic literature and print culture in the long nineteenth century. Focusing on ongoing and shared concerns and social practices across the long nineteenth century, the book's thematically-organised sections mark major Transatlantic social movements of that era as expressed, negotiated, and recorded through literary production. The Anthology offers a range of tools and texts for innovative thinking, teaching, and exploration. Headnotes provide guidance on how individual selections arose from social and historical contexts and, often, suggest potential pairings with other selections. Annotations create student-friendly identification of key terms or allusions.

Review Quotes

As an instructor and scholar in the field of nineteenthcentury American and transatlantic literature, I find Transatlantic Anglophone Literatures, 1776-1920: An Anthology a valuable text that is much needed for the classroom and the (home) office. I plan to use it for a long time to come.--Stephanie Peebles Tavera "Global Nineteenth-Century Studies 3.1"

Transatlantic Anglophone Literature, 1776-1920: An Anthology pushes productively against the conventional limits of several of its key terms: Atlantic, Anglophone, literature, and anthology. Indeed, it is their reenvisioning of the anthology as a dynamic, interactive form that enables Linda K. Hughes, Sarah Ruffing Robbins, and Andrew Taylor to challenge the parameters of other key terms. By supplementing the print anthology with an open-access digital anthology, the editors have built in the capacity for growth and change. [...] If the Norton Anthologies embodied the weightiness and distinctness of the British and US literary canons, Transatlantic Anglophone Literature captures the rapid expansion of transatlantic literary studies as it has recognized previously marginalized voices and perspectives.--Juliet Shields, University of Washington "ALH Online Review"

Transatlantic Anglophone Literatures is a triumph! It's a richly diverse assemblage of voices that brings home the complexity of transatlantic relations during the period and it's been impeccably, usefully and thoughtfully organised and annotated. I can't wait to use this truly exciting and intellectually provocative anthology in the classroom.--Kate Flint, University of Southern California

A formidable anthology that is extremely well-organized, superbly annotated and that uses the self-contradictory complexity of the anthology genre in the best of ways: by presenting the anthology not as a closed chapter, but as an invitation to individually explore a body of writing that offers many surprises as well as fresh perspectives on established material.--Julia Straub, Universität Freiburg i.Ü. "Anglia - Journal of English Philology"
