About the Author
Silvia López is a first-generation Cuban American. She holds a bachelor's in English, a specialist's degree in educational technology, and a master's in library science. For over three decades, she served as a children's librarian in Miami, Florida. Silvia is the author of fifteen books for children, including two Florida Book Award winners: Just Right Family: An Adoption Story and Queen of Tejano Music: Selena, which is also a Junior Library Guild selection. Olivia Sua is a mixed-race Colombian American illustrator who creates elaborate works from painted cut paper. She graduated from Pacific Northwest College of Art with a BFA in illustration. Set in Latin America, UNO MÁS, ONE MORE is a story about generosity. Don Manuel and his family always joyfully welcome everyone to their fiestas. One more guest is never a problem, until the night their casita collapses from being so full. Fortunately, their neighbors and friends are also generous, and by the end, Don Manuel and his family are able to welcome many more to their fiestas. With Spanish words sprinkled throughout the text, depictions of different instruments and the inclusion of a mariachi group, there is much to take in from this wonderful Spanish adaptation of a Scottish folktale. The backmatter contains information about the origin of the word mariachi, as well as the origin of mariachi groups, their clothing, instruments, and music. There is also a glossary of Spanish words. These Spanish elements combined with the universal theme of generosity make UNO MÁS, ONE MORE a fantastic addition to any library.

I recently met the author at Books and Books. She explained the idea behind the story. Silvia is such a gifted storyteller. The story made me smile. As a Hispanic family, when we get together, we're loud, eat even though we're not hungry, and laugh nonstop for no reason. Most importantly, family is family; whether close friends or relatives, our hearts are always full of love to help one another. This is a beautiful read. This story captured the family essence.

This is a wonderful story that brings happiness, music, hospitality and much more to young readers today. This great bilingual translation can help Spanish-speaking children reinforce and maintain their home language while it will teach children who are speakers of other languages, including English. The text is easy to read and follow and the illustrations are colorful! Excellent job, Silvia!!

Instead of a Scottish brogue, you get a Latino bilingual version of this adorably illustrated and charming retelling of a Scottish ballad. Silvia Lopez does a fabulous job of moving this story to the Western Hemisphere, appealing to both English and Spanish speakers. The story will appeal to children and adults alike for its colorful characters, falling house, and the warmth hospitality that is rewarded in the end. I bought this book for my little grandson, who is in a Spanish program at his school, and he'll pick up a few new words with it.
