Book Synopsis

Set in the same universe as his hit comics anthology Bowling with Corpses, Mignola returns to Lands Unknown and both writes and draws this new, original graphic novel that bursts with the fantastic, the folkloric, and even the frightening. Longtime Mignola collaborator Dave Stewart joins to bring color to this fanciful story.

A wayward theologian travels across mysterious lands and goes up against mythic monsters, bandits, and more in pursuit of proof of the existence of the old gods.

In this story of the search for gods in a world that feels abandoned by them, the titular hero travels a pilgrim road in his quest for answers. Along the way he encounters dragons, giants, devils, and a tomb of unspeakable horror, and learns not just the truth about the universe but the gravity of his own role in it.

Review Quotes

Praise for Bowling with Corpses and Other Strange Tales from Lands Unknown

"This is a world I'm terrified to live in, mostly because I know I'd never want to leave."--Patton Oswalt (Minor Threats)

"I wish I could write a love letter to this dark enchantment of a book, whose pages are filled with all that I adore most: the human and the supernatural, colliding in tales of wisdom, humor, and quiet longing -- as well as the most sumptuous art that a heart could hope to feast on."--Marjorie Liu (Monstress)

"Gorgeous and mysterious art. Fantastic and funny storytelling. Delightfully dark and whimsical. Mignola has done it again. Behold the glorious glory in this magical book of tales!!!"--Jorge R. Gutierrez (The Book of Life)

About the Author

MIKE MIGNOLA's fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. Starting in 1982 as a bad inker for Marvel Comics, he swiftly evolved into a not-so-bad artist. By the late 1980s, he had begun to develop his own unique graphic style, with mainstream projects like Cosmic Odyssey and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. In 1994, he published the first Hellboy series through Dark Horse, leading to over two decades of comics spinoffs, prose books, animated films, and live-action films. He worked on Francis Ford Coppola's film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Disney's
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), and with director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). A new film by Neil Marshall was released in 2019. Mike's books have earned numerous awards and are published ina great many countries. He lives in Southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.
