Description
Is it really true - only wineries can grow grapes? Of course not! They can be grown by anyone and are one of the most widely produced fruits in the world. There are however, many different types of grapes with some more suitable in the home garden than others. Grape vines like humus-rich, medium moisture, well drained soils in full sun. The more sun the sweeter the fruit. Not picky of soil conditions, but best sited in a sheltered location away from winter winds. The variety is self-pollinating Vitis Labrusca concord, commonly known as a fox grape, produces yellowish-greenish flowers in June which have a sweet musky fragrance. They give way to medium-sized, blue-black, edible grapes which ripen to dark purple mid season. Distinctive sweet to sweet-tart flavor.
