  • 1. Trim roots back to about 4” in length. 2. Soak plants in 6” of water standing upright for about 2-4 hours before planting. 3. Dig a hole with shovel 14” to 16” deep and wider than the roots when they are spread out. 4. Place the vine in the hole. Backfill the hole with original soil free of herbicide residue, large clods, or rocks. 5. Tap down the soil gently as you proceed, while keeping the plant straight and upright. 6. When the hole is ¾ filled, raise the vine to about 4” above the soil line. 7. Continue filling the hole until you are flush with the soil line. Gently tamp down the soil 8. You should mound the vine. – Loose soil (Herbicide free) must be placed over the vine. This mound should extend about 1” above the tip of the plant so that none of the plant is showing. This is essential since the soil protects the buds from temperature extremes as the vine comes out of the dormancy. 9. Notice the wax on the top of the vine, this is normal and should not be removed. The plant will break through when the shoots begin to bud in a few weeks. 10. When growth appears, remove the soil mound from around the vine so that the graft union is well above the soil. ** Do not over irrigate. More damage and delayed growth has come from over-irrigation than from under-irrigation. For optimal growing conditions, soil should be moist and never saturated.

Description

Is it really true - only wineries can grow grapes? Of course not! They can be grown by anyone and are one of the most widely produced fruits in the world. In fact, grape vines can be grown throughout most of the Unites States. They do require care but essentially are no harder to grow then any other plant in your garden. Turning the fruit into wine however is an art form and much has been written on the subject. Often the subject matter turns complex and involved, while you are just wanting to try your hand at it and have some fun while doing it. But best yet, often the vines themselves are as beautiful and ornamental as the fruit and wine is delicious.
Our premium grafted 1 year old bareroot grape vines ship while they are in a dormant state, without leaves, flowers and/or fruit while it is in its sleeping beauty stage. They ship grafted on good quality root stock, with a waxed bud.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this a month ago, not thinking much would come of it. I just figured it would be pretty cool to have my own grapes growing. Well, I planted it and I can already see the small grapes forming. I can’t wait to see it as a mature plant.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Received this as a a root and stick. No leaves. Wasn’t sure if it would grow but it is growing leaves. It has been in the soil for a little over two months now and growing well. No grapes yet. However the plant is healthy.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This grapevine looked healthy on arrival. Was packaged very well and came with great instructions. We planted it this spring and it appears to be thriving. We look forward to the results in the future & plan to purchase additional plants.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I ordered a Zinfandel grapevine and was so pleased with how it was shipped. It came packed very carefully, and the vine appears to be in great condition. The root ball was packed incredibly gently, and the soil was still moist. The planting directions were clear, and they have a ton of other information on their website, and on a card inserted with the packaging. I will definitely use this company again for other plants!

Top-quality well-rooted stock; already leafing out

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The weather has been highly variable here in the mid-South, so the stock was left in the opened plastic bag, and set outside to absorb alternating sun and rain for a week, after which I added water to a bucket and submerged the lower half of the bag with the stock in it for 2 days. The stock produced good-looking primary and secondary leaves, indications to me that it was ready to plant. Removing the bag and examining the roots showed a strong primary root and several long branching roots. Digging a deep and wide hole, I gently spread the branching roots out and then backfilled the hole, watering it in well. After checking the plant today, it is doing well and suffered no transplant shock. The planting section already has a row of widely-spaced posts, with wiring supporting a long-established group of Muscadine vines at one end, and I’m looking forward to a bumper crop of Zinfandel grapes to turn into wine in a few years. The Bareroot Grape Vine Zinfandel is one of several wine grape stocks Van Zyverden sells, and I’m so pleased with the quality that I plan to buy more as we expand our casual home hobby vineyard.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Plantceteras premium crafted bareroot grapevine arrives carefully packaged. A care and planting card arrives with the root stock and makes it easy to know how to care for this young vine plant. The plant itself looks healthy and is well wrapped. We have some old grapevines in our yard that do produce fruit every year so I’m curious to see how long the new vine will take to establish itself and produce fruit.
