The Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies has set Adequate Intake levels for vitamin K for adults ranging between 90 and 120 micrograms per day. The Food and Drug Administration has set a Daily Value for vitamin K at 120 micrograms for adults and children age 4 and older, which is the standard for product labeling. These are the required amounts of the vitamin according to regulatory authorities; not 45 milligrams, equivalent to 45,000 micrograms. The 100 to 300 microgram level is typically cited as a therapeutic range that has positive results in clinical studies. There is a drug form of vitamin K that contains 15 milligrams per dose and is recommended at 3 doses per day, but that is not nutritional supplementation and is used only under doctor’s supervision to treat medical conditions. Virtually all dietary supplements containing vitamin K are at physiological doses and rated in microgram amounts, not milligram amounts that are hundreds of times higher.
