Q: are filters reusable?

submitted by tunafish - 15 days ago
  • A: Hello! The filter are not reusable, they will need to be changed every 3-4 months (about 500 Cycle Hours).

  • A: Hi! They are not reusable. The carbon filters are required to ensure a near-odorless cycle. They last approximately 500 cycle hours or 3-4 months with regular use. Even if the Replace Filter light has not gone on yet, you may need to switch out your filters.

I've had the Foodcycler FC-30 for a couple of years now. I bought it because I wanted to reduce food waste and make fertilizer. We are supposed to compost where I live, so this seemed like a great idea for winter months to avoid going out in the snow. I liked the idea of making bone meal from chicken bones for my garden as well has veggie scraps. I have similar complaints to some others: it is a bit noisy and if you leave the scraps in for more than a couple of days, they can get moldy while you wait for more scraps to add. That defeats the purpose. Some of the vegetable scraps do not get that small (see photo). I also find that this is a dehydrator and not really a composter. I did buy the fertilizer tablets. My neighbors all have dogs and they have been very interested in the "fertilizer" from my machine (I was putting the dried material in my flower beds). My one neighbor from the HOA asked me what I was putting in the dirt that was attracting all the dogs. I wish I could say I loved this and it was a smart buy, but I can't. Maybe the newer ones are nicer.

After years of waiting for compost to cure during our long Chicago winters, we opted to take composting to the countertop and are thrilled with the results! It feels amazing to keep our compostable scraps out of a landfill and the reward has been the most beautiful garden ever. We have recommended this product to many and purchased it as a gift for our favorite foodies who also love to garden. Highly recommend!

Great in the winter!

I live in the northern US, where composting is difficult in the winter. The FoodCycler means I can recycle my food waste all year long. Unfortunately, I have had trouble with food sticking to the sides after the cycle and have to soak it and run it through the dishwasher. Sometimes stuff gets thoroughly stuck, and I've learned through trial and error that tough roots aren't a good idea. And in the summer, the bucket is a great size for taking out to the regular compost!

This thing is awesome. Seriously, this is a game changer in the house! We keep it right on the counter and fill it up almost every day or every other day. If the food will get stinky, then we run it that night and add more the next day. Few pro tips: 1-figure the right moisture amount otherwise you will get a thick syrup that will cake on to the sides ( you have been warned!) 2- avoid really hard foods like raw sweet potato, pits etc. 3- avoid too much fruit at once, you will have a caked on sugar candy mess at the end that will take days of soaking to get it to break down 4- Remember that it is going into your soil, so be sure to avoid salty foods. it will stay as salty when it is done and then when you put it into your soil it can kill your earthworms or plants.

Not happy with the results! Difficult to clean out

It stunk up the house and I had to chip the results out with my fingernails. I am not sure that I will ever attempt to use it again. I wish you would take it back until you perfect the process. I would recommend other Vitamix products to another person but not the Foodcycler fc-50.

Hi! We are sorry to hear your are having trouble with food sticking in the bucket of your Foodcycler. The food waste could have been too highly concentrated in foods high in natural sugars or foods containing too much moisture. The bucket can be put in the dishwasher to clean up for you, and you can also spray the bucket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.

I use it almost everyday! Really glad to have it. It’s easy to use and keep clean. I cook everything from scratch and even though it’s just me (and my pup), I manage to enough to cycle through often. It is terrific put on overnight to have the compost ready the next day, which I collect for my small culinary garden. Because my neighborhood doesn’t have trash collection and I have to deliver my trash to a county facility, this really helps reduce my overall trash volume, and related climate impact and costs. One downside: a bit noisy (not horrible though) but running it at night solves that.

I strongly believe in composting but my husband was disgusted with the bin of rotten food scraps sitting on the counter, that sometimes got smelly. Now I can run the foodcycler every few days that results in finely chopped and dried bits that go straight into the garden. It is built with high quality, heavy duty materials, just like the Vitamix blender that we have had for years now. I am so pleased with this product and have been telling everyone I know about it, everyone should have one!

Good idea, very power hungry, returned

We compost as much as possible in our household so I was excited to see Vitamix enter this market. I unfortunately returned this product because of how power hungry this machine is. It draws 1,200 watts for 8-12 hours each day. That's like leaving your electric kettle or a space heater on for the entire day. This device is not ecological or economical. It's also a bit loud and smelly. You'll be changing those disposable carbon filters often unless you don't mind the smell.

We are sorry to hear the FoodCycler was not for you. Each cycle consumes less than 1 kWh (approximately 0.8 kWh) - this is roughly equivalent to having a desktop computer running for the same amount of time as the cycle. Dependent on where you live, each cycle should not cost you more than a couple of cents. The FoodCycler™ has built-in sensor technology that monitors the dryness and humidity of the food waste. Once complete, the unit will stop the cycle automatically.

I’ve run about 12 cycles of food waste, and absolutely love this composter/dehydrator. I had trouble starting it the first time because I held down the start button—it should simply be pressed and released. I only include vegetable waste, egg shells, and coffee grounds, and the resulting product is perfect for my garden. Two-person household fills bucket daily. This input keeps the unit clean. Wonderful invention!
