Cute Story

* 3/5 Steam Rating * First Person; Jewish MCs; Workplace Romance I LOVE a book that showcases marginalized characters or characters that are rarely portrayed in stories. This one had a lot! Not only do we two Jewish MCs, we have a single teen dad (who’s now an adult), a MC with severe depression, and a MMC that is more rounded in build. There’s also that interesting first steamy scene… IYKYK. This was a fun predictable story (in a cute rom-com way) of two coworkers working to set up their bosses and end up falling for each other in the process. It was fun to see these two characters move from friends to lovers. Add in Russell’s daughter Elodie and you have a golden story! Where I struggled a little bit was Ari’s reaction to the big build up. It honestly felt forced, unrealistic, and overly dramatic. I also felt like Russell’s weight wasn’t adequately described, which made it hard for me to picture him. His weight is mentioned vaguely, to the point that you know he has a rounded belly but that’s it. I wish that the author would have given as much attention to this fluffiness as she did to describing the rest of him. It honestly felt like his weight was thrown in as an afterthought to check one more “non-traditional” box. Trigger Warning: Severe Depression

A sweet romance with a mental health focus

5 out of 5 stars
MyTargetReview - 3 years ago
Rachel Lynn Solomon does it again! This book is just so dang sweet. The hijinks with their bosses was cute - very reminiscent of the movie Set It Up. This may be an odd way of describing it, but I feel like it’s the most “realistic” romance I’ve ever read, and I mean that in a good way. Ari and Russell felt like real people. Their hopes and fears felt so real and made sense. While yes, this book is a romance, it’s first and foremost a book about mental health. The tones are more serious than you might expect from a rom-com (there’s less of the “com” in this one). I love how many books have included mental health as a major topic this year (thinking of The Charm Offensive and RLS’ We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This). You can tell how much of Rachel is in Ari, and I loved Ari’s vulnerability and growth. There’s also so much great rep in this book, from Jewish rep to a fat male lead - and there’s more steam than The Ex Talk. Overall, I highly recommend this.
