Q: What pesticides and fungicides are used when necessary to spray the crops?

submitted by Boknowsbest - 4 months ago
  • A: Our crop protectant utilization is highly selective and minimal. We do not use atrazine, glyphosate or any crop protectant commonly discussed in media (social or otherwise) or linked in any way to known acute or chronic human or environmental damage. We continue to drive scientific, agricultural and food, and regulatory communities to advance knowledge of the complex interactions and role crop protectants play in providing nutritious food while ensuring integrity of environmental and human health and supporting prosperous rural communities. So, while we do not share detailed farming practices for competitive reasons, hopefully the above gives you a sense of the degree of our commitment at Wyman's.

Q: Are these grown with any pesticides or herbicides?

submitted by dragonflyleaf - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi there! Thank you so much for your question. Wild blueberries are a unique crop distinct from regular blueberries in that they are a distinctive species that is not planted or tilled, but rather occurs in a natural ecosystem. Because wild blueberries occur in a natural ecosystem, with naturally occurring checks and balances, the need to apply crop protectants is significantly reduced when compared to regular blueberries. At Wyman's we have a dedicated and continuous effort to minimizing the crop protectants we do use, and we also utilize organic crop protectants as much as is feasible. Furthermore, we are committed to testing fully organic growing and have dedicated acreage for this purpose.

Wild blueberries have tons more antioxidants and vitamins than regular so this feels like a great bang for my Buck! They are small, tiny compared to store bought blueberries which we love because that feels more natural. My toddler loves these plain or in his yogurt, smoothies or oatmeal.

    Non-organic and potentially unhealthy

I really like these blueberries. However, there is no information on how they are grown and harvested. Since these are not organic, I sent a written inquiry to Wyman's asking if they use any pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals on their crops. I haven't gotten any response and it has been more than a month. If you do research on non-organic food, blueberries are among the top 12 fruits and vegetables that typically have the highest concentration of harmful chemicals. This top 12 is also known as "The Dirty Dozen". This is usually due to herbicides and pesticides sprayed near or on the crops. The fact that the company wouldn't provide any information on how their blueberries are grown is a red flag. Even though they taste great, it comes with the potential risk of exposure to high levels of toxic substances. Since I haven't been able to confirm how safe or unsafe these are to eat, I've decided to stop buying them. Instead, I'm going to find an organic version of frozen blueberries even though it will cost more. However, I feel good health is worth the extra investment.

I love the taste of these and the size. I guess because they’re wild blueberries they’re smaller than the store bought ones which I actually like. I love that they are frozen and don’t feel forced to eat them so quickly before they go bad. I love that they have more antioxidants making it that much better for you as I am on an eating better journey. I was a little skeptical buying especially because of the price but I will definitely buy these again when I run out. Love it in my oatmeal, yogurt, and açaí bowls!! It is a bit pricey but totally worth it as a 3lb bag can go a long ways.

When you open the bag it smells like you’re in the middle of a blueberry patch (at least what I imagine that would smell like) These are 100% worth the money. I love baking with them, adding to yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies etc. My son will eat them, slightly frozen, by the spoonful.

These are the best quality frozen blueberries ever - I don't mind paying just a bit more for the high quality and US/Canada product source. Excellent reliable product. For best results, recommend storing opened bag inside a Freezer strength zip bag in freezer.

Love the berries but bad packaging

    lmno20 - 2 years ago
These tastes great but the packaging causes a lot of freezer burn and water (later large clumps of ice) to form inside. The seal is always defective and doesn't close correctly. They are frozen so should taste fresh longer but they shrivel up pretty fast and become almost tasteless. Eat them quickly before these issues can set in.

These berries are small, and it's like all of the flavor of a larger blueberry has been condensed into them; they taste really, really good. Usually more expensive than the smaller frozen blueberry bags (although keep an eye on the sales, there have been a few days where it's been cheaper per ounce!), but given the extra flavor, highly recommend if you want to treat yourself.
