Most are made from ceramic or porcelain. Alternatives you’ll also see include earthenware and some wood-crafted nativity pieces.
Typical sets include the Holy Family plus common additions such as the Three Wise Men (or Kings), angels, shepherds, and animals like sheep, lambs, donkeys, or camels. Many sets also include a stable, arch, or crèche-style backdrop.
They’re designed primarily for indoor tabletop display — for example on mantels, consoles, shelves, or other prominent tabletop areas.
Common finishes include plain white or neutral tones, multicolored painted sets, and blue-and-white Delft-style designs. Minimalist white wood finishes are also available.
Some decorations include built-in lighting, such as an LED with an on/off switch powered by button cell batteries. Many other sets, however, require no batteries.
