Adhesive hooks are designed for smooth surfaces. Common indoor surfaces include painted walls, finished wood, painted concrete cinder blocks, laminate, glass, metal and tiles. Outdoor/light-clip listings also include doors, vinyl siding, soffits, finished fences and windows.

Product notes warn against using adhesive hooks on wallpaper. They also advise not to hang hooks over beds or on valuable items. For outdoor clips, avoid rough or porous surfaces such as brick, cement board or rough-sawn wood, which can prevent a secure bond.

For indoor hooks, clean the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove grime and dust so the adhesive can bond. For outdoor clips, wipe the area with a dry cloth to remove dirt and debris before applying.

Grip the top of the adhesive strip and pull it slowly and straight down toward the floor. A slow, straight-down pull stretches the adhesive for clean removal without leaving residue or damaging the surface.

Many listings note the hooks themselves can be reused by fitting replacement adhesive strips. After removing a hook (use the slow, straight-down pull on the strip), you can rehang the same hook using new refill strips made for indoor or outdoor use.
