Indoor fairy lights are commonly powered by USB, batteries (many models use 3 × AA batteries), or a plug-in electric adapter. Some designs support more than one option (for example USB plus battery), while others are electric-only.

Indoor fairy lights offer many effects, including steady/constant light, flashing/twinkling, fading (slow fade), chasing or sequential/wave patterns, and rotating/blinking styles. Many sets combine multiple effects into preset modes; multi-mode remotes and controllers can provide up to a dozen or more settings (examples report up to 16 modes).

Certification and intended use vary by model. Some strings are UL-listed and are labeled for indoor/outdoor use, while others are marked for indoor use only. Check the product label or listing for certification marks and the manufacturer’s stated indoor/outdoor rating.

Most indoor fairy lights use LED bulbs; a few listings use incandescent bulbs. LED formats reported include SMD (surface-mounted) LEDs, integrated LED modules, faceted bulbs (often labeled M5 or M6), and small discrete LEDs in sizes like 3 mm and 5 mm.

Strands commonly use thin copper wire for the conductors and plastics such as PVC or polypropylene for insulation and components. Other parts may include general plastics, glass (for faceted bulbs), and small metal fittings depending on the design.

Some sets include a built-in timer (one example is an automatic 6 hours on / 18 hours off cycle when set to the On position). Many multi-mode sets include a remote or controller to change modes, adjust brightness, or switch the lights on/off. Basic on/off switches are also commonly provided.
