Tall gates are offered in a range of heights. Common sizes include 26", 28", 30", 32", 33", 36", and 38" tall.

Most tall gates are made from metal or plastic. Other common materials include fabric or polyester panels and plastic mesh; a few models also incorporate wood components.

Features that simplify adult use include walk-through doors, wider door openings (for example, about a 20" opening), hold-open or auto-close functions, and one-handed or single-step latching mechanisms.

Gates intended for stairs typically use hardware mounting for a secure fit, have door swings or stoppers designed to open away from the stair edge, and include guidance to mount the gate back from the top stair edge for added safety.

Tall gates span a wide range of widths. Typical doorway gates cover about 24" up to roughly 53" (many common sizes are ~29.5"–53"). Retractable or extension-equipped gates can reach about 71". Multi-panel or configurable systems extend much farther, with some setups reaching roughly 190" or more.

Weights range from about 3.75 pounds up to roughly 30 pounds. Retractable units can be very light (~3.75 lb), many metal walk-through or doorway gates fall in the mid-single-digit to mid-teen pounds, and larger panel/play-yard systems are heavier. Some play yards are lightweight, foldable, and include a carry strap for portability.
