Frames are commonly made from steel (including carbon steel), aluminum or aluminum alloys, and other metal constructions. Some folding models also combine metal frames with tear-resistant fabric for seats or collapsible storage panels.

Many models fold or collapse for compact storage. Common styles fold upright against a vehicle, fold flat, collapse to a slim profile (about 6" thick), or fold small enough for a trunk or closet. Some designs ship fully assembled so no setup is required out of the box.

Assembly needs vary: many listings note “Adult assembly required” with basic tools included, some specify “No tools needed,” and a few arrive fully assembled out of the box.

Vehicle-mounted carriers typically attach to a 2" hitch receiver (Class III or IV) and include features to secure and load equipment: folding ramps (example: a 42" ramp that folds flat), multiple tie-down points, anti-rattle or hitch-pin hardware (example: 5/8" hitch pin), and straps or anchors for secure transport.

Common features include dual braking systems and dual brake locks on walkers, linked or one-touch foot brakes, 360° brake wheels on some carts, and forward-lock options on swivel front wheels to improve stability.
