Refill methods vary by design: some covers have a slide-out or removable bottom, some have an easy-to-remove wooden top (often held by a silicone seal) so you can drop a standard box or stack of tissues inside, and some cylindrical designs require rolling tissues into a tube to insert from the top.

Unfinished wooden covers are blank canvases: you can stain or paint them, carve or wood-burn designs, or apply decoupage, stickers or embellishments to match your decor. They take common wood finishes and decorative techniques well.

Cylindrical cases are typically designed for rolled or refolded tissues inserted from the top, while lidded rectangular covers accept a full-size tissue box placed inside with the first tissue threaded through the wooden lid. In both cases, sealing rings or tight-fitting lids help the dispenser work smoothly.

Cup-holder–friendly designs have narrow profiles with diameters around 2.7–2.8 inches, and compact heights so they can slide into most car cup holders while holding a small supply of tissues.
