Headboard sits between the wall and the ensemble frame, attaching not to the bed base but to the legs, for stability. Cushioned layer for softness and comfort. I really love the look of this head board. It was easy to install which is always a great bonus. The reason I took off a star is that the head board is pretty tall. I have a mattress topper so it makes my bed much higher. If I did not have my topper, there would be a pretty large gap between my bead and the head board which I would not like. Otherwise, solid product!

Great headboard for the money! Very easy to assemble. The fabric almost looks "plastic-y" in the website photos but rest assured, it is a light gray fabric with nice stitching and matching buttons.
