Q: does this have to be attached to the wall

A: We did not attach it to the wall. But we also made sure to place heavier items only on the bottom shelves to avoid any risk.

Q: I'm guessing the glue is for the dial rods? No where in the instructions does it mention it but comes with it.

I ordered driftwood and white. The driftwood is brown not the grayish tone that it shows. I’m going to have to paint it. Was easy to put together and seems durable enough. Just really disappointed about the color.

This is fiberboard covered by a very nice real wood veneer. A few tips: - put glue generously on both sides of each dowel. - leave shelf bolts loose until you’ve positioned it on the wall. Then you can adjust the unit until it is level and at the right angle to the wall - done correctly each shelf should rest flush against the wall and the tapered edge on top should lie flat on the wall. - now you can tighten the shelf bolts - Search your preferred online store for “small L bracket” and anchor every shelf to the wall. In my opinion this additional step will help give structure in case you plan on putting lots of books on these, as I plan on doing. We are happy with this as we got 5 of these for what one “real” example would cost. I really appreciate the other reviews who wrote suggesting tightening last. That’s a killer tip and can’t be stressed enough. Other reviews that complain about fit and finish didn’t do this.

Overall - happy with my purchase. I bought 2 blue bookcases and 2 blue console tables for my primary-colors kitchen. Love the designs and the blue color. And the price was very affordable - especially for four pieces. They came quickly, and were fairly well packaged. All pieces and hardware were in the boxes. However, there were quite a few flaws in the bookcases - the styrofoam packing material stuck to most shelf edges requiring light sanding to remove, and there were a few nicks in the paint. The worst flaw was having the uprights constructed in two pieces. This made putting the bookcase together very difficult, and it didn’t seem structurally sound. I choose to add metal mending plates to support the upright seam (see photo). I also decided to add corner braces to add extra strength to the shelves (see photo). In contrast, the only flaws in the console tables were a few paint nicks. It seems they even improved the product by preinstalling the drawer slides. I added ceramic tomato drawer pulls to tie in to my tomato red walls (see photo). I think all four pieces look great in my kitchen!
Not worth the risk of receiving damaged and returning huge package.

Didn’t take much time to assemble, less than an hour. The vertical slats are each in 2 pieces. The material is very porous so when inserting the screws into the slat there is nothing to hold the screw in. Looks like soft paper chips or cardboard. Came apart. I tried to use the supplied glue to repair, but didn’t help to hold the vertical parts together. The quality is very poor. Bubbles on shelves and poor finish. This unit is unsafe with the vertical strut not together. I will be returning. Very disappointing.

Had to return the 2 I ordered after spending 2+ hours assembling. The joints are not well-designed so they weakened and collapsed. One arrived with chipped paint too. At least one joint cracked during assembly maybe 2. Pretty terrible quality.

We love our ladder shelf! It is sturdy and rich looking. The perfect complement to our living room. While it does appear more brown than in the photo, I still find it have the weathered grey undertones. Easy to assemble. I would highly recommend it.

Such a great bookcase for the money! I purchased this one because of the great reviews! Thank you! The color is more of a medium brown than a greyish tone like most driftwood. Instructions were very thorough and parts were labelled clearly which made it "easy peasy" to assemble. Bonus was that it arrived sooner than expected.

This is exactly what I was looking for! I have this in my living room and have received a lot of compliments! The color is nice and works with my decor (rustic), and has held my decorations well. The shelves are sturdy. Perfect purchase!

This might be a great bookcase if you get one that isn't chipped. This is the second bookcase we have ordered and both of them were damaged in the exact same spot so we are giving up on the piece of furniture. We didn't even get to putting it together either time. The second time we unboxed the bookshelf we were much more careful incase it was damaged so we didn't have to put a puzzle back in the box.

Love this shelf! We use it to hold our DVD collection and it's perfect. It was easy to assemble but I recommend 2 people and a hand drill to save a lot of time and hassle. I also used grip pads on the feet because I didn't want to screw the shelf into the wall and it works great. Bare in mind that DVDs are not particularly heavy, so if you are using this shelf for anything substantial or around children, I would recommend screwing it into the wall. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was the wood did seem a little flimsy but once it was against the wall it was great.
