Q: Does it cause gnats?

submitted by Ana - 1 year ago
  • A: Yes! The bag was filled with gnats and not my house is infested with fungus gnats. It’s been two weeks of trying to get rid of them.

submitted bySg - 11 months ago
  • A: Hi Ana! Organic potting mixes can sometimes attract or harbor fungus gnats, especially if they stay too moist for too long. Fungus gnats are drawn to damp, organic-rich environments where they can lay their eggs. It's not that the potting mix causes gnats directly — rather, it provides the kind of conditions (moisture + organic material) that gnats like if the mix is kept wet. To prevent gnats, it's important to let the top layer of the soil dry out between waterings, use good drainage, and consider adding a top dressing like sand or diatomaceous earth, which makes it harder for gnats to breed. Please feel free to reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com with questions or concerns. Our team is always happy to help!

Q: How do I get rid of the fungus gnats that have taken over my house due to this potting soil? The bag was filled with gnats and when I opened it they swarmed out. I have been dealing with a gnat infestation for two weeks!

submitted by Sg - 11 months ago
  • A: Hi Sg! We’re truly sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Fungus gnats can be a frustrating issue, and while they can sometimes occur with organic soils, they definitely shouldn't be swarming out of a freshly opened bag. To help us look into this, please email a clear photo of both the front and back of the potting mix bag to contact@backtotheroots.com so our production team can review it as part of our quality assurance process. We’d also be happy to share some tips for managing and eliminating fungus gnats in your space. It would be helpful to know if you noticed the gnats before using the soil or if they appeared after potting. Thank you again for reaching out — we’re here to help and want to make this right!

Q: Is this safe for pets, to grow grass for cats and dogs?

submitted by R - 1 year ago

We do recommend supervising your pets around the planter—especially if they tend to dig or eat soil. For added peace of mind, consider using a planter with a cover or mesh that lets the grass grow through while keeping the soil protected. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com—we're always happy to help!

    Infested with fungus gnats

My house is absolutely infested with fungus gnats. I didn’t even use it on my plants because it was CRAWLING with gnats as soon as I opened it. But they were all released into my house and are now colonizing my plants and drains. Costly and time consuming to eradicate them. Don’t waste your money on this product

    Not potting soil

The soil is terrible. It was basically a blend of mulch with very little soil. Do not buy this!

    my soil came with gnats

I don't think this soil was stored properly at my local Target store. I ordered a bag for pickup and opened it to discover gnats inside. There are tiny air holes in the bag that they will sneak into if the product is not stored properly (in overly wet conditions). Despite getting rid of the soil and returning it, my plants now have gnats hanging around.

Hi Paige! We're sorry to hear you've had this experience — what you're describing sounds like mycelial growth, not mold, which is a sign of healthy, biologically active soil. We would love to take a look. Please send photos of the soil in each bag, and photos of the full fronts and backs of the bags to contact@backtotheroots.com. Great Soil for Happy Plants

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I planted my propagation and she’s doing great! The soil was super moist. I don’t think most people think about soil and how much it matters when it comes to planting. However, good soil is a foundational investment. This seems to be a great one.

Full of fungus gnats. Just got it home from Target pick up and flies/gnats were in the target bag, now they are in my car and are clearly coming from inside this bag of potting soil. Would definitely not recommend.

    Good All-Purpose Soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the Back To The Roots Best Potting Mix to replant my thyme plant. The soil had worm castings and symbiotic mycorrhizae. It also had yucca extract for moisture control. So far my plant is thriving. I watered my plant once a week and the leaves and stems did not wilt or dry out. The soil was also used for a tomato plant replant. The soli was not too messy to work with. Large chunks of soil came out of the bag. Easy to clean up. The bag size of 6 dry quarts was easy to handle. Great for small plant replants. Can be used for indoor and outdoor plants, herbs, flowers, vegetables, and fruit plants. I would buy this brand of soil for planting projects.

BAG INVESTED WITH BUGS!!!! DONT BUY

I would do zero stars if I could. I should have read the bad reviews but I didn’t. The soil was INVESTED with gnats. I wanted this brand and this soil to be my go to because it’s organic and sees to have good values but nope. This ruined my seedlings and I thought it was me. NEVER buy this. Better off just buying Miracle Grow.

    Rich, High quality soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Excited to get back to planting now that our weather allows it and we decided to use this soil for some veggies and flowers. The soil breaks down easily and smooth. I didn't smell any of the usual unpleasant soil stench that normally accompanies soil, so that was a pleasant surprise. I don't have any issues with the ingredients listed. Our plants have already begun growing and we just planted them less than a week ago. We water every few days making sure not to over saturate and it seems to retain the water fairly well.
