Pennington Smart Seed Bermuda Grass Full Sun Grass Seed and Fertilizer 1.75 lb

Built a new house (Zone 8B) a few years ago and of course contractor put down cheap annual ryegrass which was dead by the following summer and I was left with nothing but crabgrass and weeds. I've wanted a Bermuda lawn forever but sod is out of the question with a 2 acre yard. Decided to give this a shot, started with a small test area about 20' x 20'. A week before planting I sprayed the area with glysophate. I then scalped with mower and weedeater, cleaned up all loose debris and raked the soil. Planted this seed at the recommended rate using Scott's broadcast spreader on setting "4" on 6/18/25. Raked the soil again to ensure good seed to soil contact. Here is the most important step, water frequently! Since temps were 95 to 100 everyday and no rain, I lightly watered the area every three hours. On day 5, I started seeing germination. Kept watering at the same rate for two more weeks and it began filling in nicely. After first mowing when grass was around 2 inches, I cut back watering to normal rate (1 inch per week). At week five, I fertilized with a 13-13-13 fertilizer. Ferilized again at week seven. Now, eight weeks in and it is thick, lush and dark green. I can't say enough good things about this product, my only complaint is that it growing too fast, have to mow every two days to keep HOC at 1.5 inches without removing more than 1/3. Not a bad problem to have! Can't wait to plant more next year.

Threw out a bag of smart seed and racked it, watered it and it sprouted in 8 days. this seed has worked for me twice and this time just 2 weeks ago in south texas. Threw down the seed and it sprouted just great. Great product

This product did not deliver at all. I carefully followed instructions, making sure to prep planting area and generously watered seed after planting. It's been over a month and not a seed has sprouted.

Planted the Saturday after purchase on 4/19/25. Area was prepped and raked smooth by hand ,seeded by spreader and raked again by hand.Have not seen any new grass emerge since .

Purchase (2) 30 lb bags and (1) 10 lb bag..., to cover less than the area it should cover and followed the directions to a T. Lots of time, effort and water and ...... VERY SMALL AMOUNT of grass grew! The areas I did with just plain, old grass seed to much better! This was A LOT of wasted money, water and time! Would like a refund!

Unfortunately, I am forced to give this seed a one star. I do not recommend Pennington Smart Seed Bermudagrass. My gardener planted it in Southern California in October 2023. The winters here are mild and it doesn't get below freezing. The grass was doing very well on March 9. (I have attached photo from that date as well as current photos.) We purchased three 8.75 lb bags of the seed, paid our gardener to prep soil and plant...and of course watered to germinate and establish the grass. (It was not an inexpensive project by any means.) I am very dissatisfied with the results. The grass has died, except for a small area where it receives some shade from the hot California sun. Apparently this grass seed does not tolerate the hot, full sun of SoCal although the seed package indicates that it will. The "ideal planting zone" on the package covers quite a large area-nearly half the country-one size does not fit all. And it is ludicrous that the Pennington representative suggested we should have planted it in the spring to early summer-I would agree if we were in one of those states that experience freezing winter temperatures-but not in SoCal. If we had planted in the spring, I don't believe the young blades would have survived the direct sun better than grass already established from the fall. Thus, I don't feel this particular seed is suited for SoCal and should not be marketed for use in this part of the country. And, as I stated above, I already contacted a Pennington representative. She suggested we plant again next March-June. We will plant again, but we will not be using Pennington seed.

Spread this seed approximately 6 weeks ago and not a single blade of grass has appeared.

Same as a lot of other comments. Seeded Lawn, watered daily, 2+ weeks and nothing. The seeds literally faded from green to white and are still there after 3 weeks. Bags says "Guaranteed to Grow" or your money back so I hope I can get a refund. Luckily, I only bought one bag to test it out. ** If you look at the picture I posted, the white rice looking things in the bare dirt is the grass seed thats been in my yard for two weeks **

I planted some Scott's Bermuda and it looks like a beautiful southern style Kentucky Blue. Fine blade and dark green. After some trenching I needed more. The store was out so I used this mix and Pennington has always worked great for me. But this mix looks like Centipede. Thick blade and ugly. Grew fast and easy but now I have patches of ugly looking yard. I completely regret buying this mix.

But I purchased the Bermuda grass bag and the fescue is of course burning up.

We purchases this for our grass in NC. Raked the yard, watered the yard, spread the bag as it says to do. We watered the grass daily for almost 2 weeks. So now it has been a month and still nothings. Basically 150.00 bucks down the drain.

Since purchasing my first home in 2020, I've gotten very into gardening and yard work, so this was really something I was looking forward to. But I followed all directions, and after literally months, I never saw any difference in my lawn. Wouldn't recommend.

Is the tractor to loosen the soil completely went through the soil Raked it then drop the seats according to bag. It's been 20 days and still nothing. Literally absolutely nothing I live in Northern Arizona so it should have worked. Don't know why it didn't

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product as part of a free sample program. I put down the Pennington Smart Seed Bermuda Mix about 4 weeks ago. At first I was skeptical if it would fill in the patches in my backyard. We had a freeze in January and nothing had really come back in this spot. It was a slow start but it's finally coming through. I even went on vacation for 5 days and didn't water and it's still working. It has a ways to go still but I'm happy with the seeds filling in my bare spots. I would definitely buy this and use again. I have already told me neighbors about it.

I watered it every night so the sun would not evaporate the water as fast. I do not know of it majes a difference but in Trxas we have been having record high temperatures for the months of April and May, so I do not know if this has an impact on the grass growing.
