Q: Autistic where? I dont see how it’s autistic

submitted by Dani - 2 months ago

  • A: The shifted gaze is the big giveaway. The doll is not making eye contact. Huge trait of someone with Autism. That’s what I love about this. But also….. adding a few items that one on the spectrum could commonly use. I ordered one and we already received it. My son has Autism and can relate to the doll wearing headphones and communicating with an AAC device. He doesn’t use a fidget spinner - but I’m not going to get bent out of shape over that. I’m very happy with it. 😄

  • A: Autistic people don't look a certain way. The doll is showing representation of someone that is on the spectrum such as the headphones, AAC device and a fidget accessory in hand.

  • A: Developed over 18 months in collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), the doll features design elements to authentically reflect some autistic experiences. These include a slightly averted gaze, more flexible elbows and wrists to facilitate stimming, a pink fidget spinner, noise-cancelling headphones, and a symbol-based Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tablet. The doll also wears a loose-fitting dress and flat shoes, addressing common sensory discomforts. Advocates and parents have welcomed the doll, noting its potential to help children with autism feel represented and foster important conversations about neurodiversity. While UK educators and advocates praised the increased visibility, they underscored that autism is a spectrum and no single doll can encompass all autistic traits.

  • A: please be so fr oh my god. autistic people do not have a certain look, she has her tools. her AAC board that can assist autistics w communication, her fidget ring because we love having sensory tools with us, and her noise cancelling headphones because life is too loud for us. this doll was created in collaboration with a non profit organization led by autistic people, so i'm positive they know what they're doing. there is no way to create a doll that can cover autism perfectly as autism is a spectrum, but giving her different tools can cover a broad amount of autistic individuals.

submitted byan autistic adult - 2 months ago
  • A: Also the loose clothes and flat shoes. It's very thoughtfully done and her accessories could be put on any doll.

Love it

Daughter with ASD loves it; she used an AAC device (talker) when younger and has friends who use them. Thank you for making this doll. I (mom) almost cried when I saw her

Not worth it

Very cheaply made. Hair was inferior quality. Definitely not up to standards of previous Barbie dolls. Concept of addressing autism was only redeeming feature.

Adult with Autism Says Thanks Mattel!

I'm an adult with autism. I don't go around flapping my hands all the time, but when I do it I always smile because it makes me happy. I can zone out to a fidget spinner for hours. I take earplugs with me when I go out in public. I don't need communication help, but sometimes words take a lot more effort. Clothing often makes my bones itch. Is she one size fits all autistics? No. But she does have some things in common with an awful lot of us - some things, not everything - and the fact she exists matters. Posing is a little limited even with the jointed arms, because they're single jointed instead of double, but she can t-rex hands and the joints move smoothly, so I'm cool with that. Biggest complaint is putting the headphones over her hair in the promo photos, because that looks like sensory hell, lol. I have named her Shari. She is my friend. Thanks Mattel!

Good Representation

My daughter had ASD and she loves this doll. She is very impressed with the articulation. She does feel, however, that the doll should have shorts or a longer dress.

amazing and suggestions

Great job mattel first off. I love the eye gaze, wrists, the hair is soft thank you. suggestions: the knees should articulate and the ankles too, I find this dissonant. also, in barbie as in life, it’s hard to keep the aac device on the hand. the aac device also turns away from barbie and isn’t seated on the hand toward the barbie using it (mistake). it would have been good to add a strap on both the aac device and fidget spinner for loss prevention, barbie could wear either items or both as needed. the shoes are easy to lose- tho they are flat and more ‘comfortable’. sneakers might be appropriate and harder to lose. when barbie sits the dress hikes up-not a good look. an easy-on pant would be a welcome addition.

My daughter with ASD was thrilled to add this Barbie to her collection. She no longer plays with Barbies but is displaying this in her room. Representation is important, especially for young girls. There are so many thoughtful details on this doll.
