Book Synopsis
#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER - NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK - Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time in this raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough.A PEOPLE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir.
A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran toward his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they had in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother's wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world. To make her mother known. This extraordinary book is written in both Lisa Marie's and Riley's voices, a mother and daughter communicating--from this world to the one beyond--as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other--the last words of the only child of an American icon.
Review Quotes
"Instead of tap dancing around the hard parts, we're drilling into the bedrock. We hear less from Presley and more from Keough, who comes across as level headed, valiant and kind. . . . Keough approaches the episode with respectful levity, the best tool available to members of a dysfunctional family. . . . Presley still gets a word in here and there, and these passages show how determined she was to stand up to her demons."--The New York Times "When her actor daughter, Riley Keough, writes that she wants Lisa Marie to emerge from the pages of the memoir as a 'three-dimensional character', she's not kidding . . . it's clear that Presley was nothing if not radically honest. It's also striking how Keough seems to almost plead with the reader to understand and love her mother as much as she does. Ultimately, this is a book built on grief: Lisa Marie Presley's for her father and son, but also a daughter's for her mother."--The Guardian "The book is of two minds: It's an unadorned, conversational memoir that's more matter of fact than gossipy, little interested in preserving what her father's biographer Peter Guralnick once called 'the dreary bondage of myth.' And it's a frank, almost unbearably heavy meditation on grief. . . . Stunningly candid . . . Both women write gracefully about the unbearable, immovable heaviness of grief. Keough's portrait of her mother in her final months is especially indelible. 'I had mistakenly thought she was so strong-minded that nothing could ever truly hobble her, ' she writes. 'But of course it could. Enough pain can hobble anyone.'"--The Washington Post

Great book. A funny and sad story all on one. How hard it must have been for her to be judged by so many for who she was. A life not lived long enough. Could have been a longer book, easy and interesting read! You don’t have to be an Elvis fan to enjoy, if you are you will like it even more! Also, if you have never listened to her music you should.

A lovely book mostly narrated by Lisa Marie herself and filled in with extra information by her daughter Riley. Both women combine to give a definitive picture of Lisa Marie and Elvis and her whole family. It's obviously quite sad, but very well written.

Luckily the book didn't arrive banged up from shipment since it was just thrown in a box with no protection. I wish Target would remove the stickers they put on the front cover of the books because it's difficult to peel off and it leaves a sticky residue. I was surprised at how emotional this book was since I went into it blind not reading any reviews beforehand. Such a heartbreaking story learning more about Lisa Marie and the close bond she shared with her father. So many traumatic events she went through and experienced in her life. I too struggle with mental health so it was emotional to read about all her issues and I connected with her on similar experiences. Overall this is a great book to read for a book club as there is so much to discuss. I wish there was more but sadly since she passed away it couldn't be truly completed; although her daughter Riley did a fantastic job of weaving in her perspective as well.

As a huge Elvis fan, this is a must read. Even if not, it’s an interesting read to learn about the life of the only child of the King of Rock N Roll.
