    Grain Free Diets = Heart Enlargement

    We fed our Chihuahua Nature’s Recipe Grain-Free Wet Food for several years after he was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. He did well on it for a long time, and we truly believed we were making a good choice for his health. Sadly, he passed away very suddenly in July 2025 due to cancer that we didn’t know he had. Prior to that, during an emergency vet visit, we were told his heart appeared slightly enlarged and that he would need to start heart medication. I want to share this as a note of caution, especially for owners of small dogs. There have been ongoing discussions and studies about potential links between grain-free diets and heart issues, including enlargement. While we can’t say for certain what caused our dog’s condition, it’s something I wish we had looked into more closely earlier. Every dog is different, but it may be worth discussing diet choices with your veterinarian, especially if your pet is on a grain-free diet long-term
