Growing up as a Canadian-born Vietnamese Chinese American, Kat Lieu sought comfort in the flavors of her youth like taro and black sesame. But she struggled to find a home for herself as a third-culture baker in American bakeries, online, or in cookbooks. In the auspiciously titled 108 Asian Cookies Lieu honors the varied and rich tapestry of Asian cultures and ingredients that inspired these recipes. Kat Lieu’s 108 Asian Cookies is a well written love letter to Asian culinary ingredients, the intercultural expression of care in baking, and the third culture experience. If you’re a foodie who loves fascinating flavors, these recipes are the perfect guide to be an adventurous baker. The world was colonized, in part, for the spice trade. These Silk Road influenced recipes step beyond the mundane realm of traditional, familiar cookies while tantalizing the bold, sophisticated palate. The personal stories throughout the book are a familiar, comforting, and affirming narrative to anyone who has experienced a third culture upbringing in the US. The photography in and of itself is beautifully inspired. An impressive number of James Beard Award-winners have praised this book. I highly recommend this book.

Bought this for my sister for her birthday and she’s super excited to try recipes. As some may know, “not too sweet" is a high compliment in our Asian cultures because it signifies a successful balance of flavors, indicating the dessert is sophisticated and pleasant rather than overpoweringly sugary. My sister had a pandan flavored wedding cake so this cookbook is right up her alley.

108 Asian Cookies

This is my kind of cookbook. I love trying new flavours and food experiences. This book delivers on both unique recipes and non-standard ingredients use. I am just getting started but look forward to baking my way through all the recipes, both sweet and savoury. Highly recommend, as well as Kat Lieu's other two cookbooks!
