A: Actually these sleeves are hollow with wood pieces on all sides. I would not sand the corners as you would likely end up with a hole or at least expose the edges of the boards.

Terrible mounting supplies
Giving this a 2 stars because the shelf itself is beautiful. However the wall anchors damaged my walls. The anchors themselves are two completely different sizes on top and bottom, it could not be properly screwed into the wall the way the manual says. Two of them ended up breaking halfway into the wall and left the surrounding wall swollen and bulging out. I used a stud finder prior to installation. Very disappointed.
