Q: can the unit be disassembled to remove one drawer to make the whole unit somewhat shorter?

A: Yes, you can remove one of the drawers. Since the set is 24" high, and I needed it to be 23" to fit under my son's dorm room sink, I easily removed one of the smaller drawers, and now it fits!

Cheaply made with flimsy thin plastic. At this affordable price point, I wasn't expecting a beautiful storage unit by any means. But the poor quality is atrocious. I bought needed 2 units but only ordered 1 first to see how I like it. The feel of it turned out to be slightly disappointing and you can tell the drawers are quite loose but it got the job done. So I ordered another unit and when it arrived, the very. Top of the drawer unit popped up completely when I was picking it up gently off the ground. I got a replacement thinking I made a comment about the broken unit so the replacement would be in working order. How wrong of me! The storage unit practically came apart around the middle. It looks like someone threw it across the room before sending it to me. The the top of the drawer also has a coffee type stain. So maybe it was a unit another customer returned? This drawer unit is like disposable utensils, it probably won't last especially if you need to move a year or two down the road.

Easy to put together. All pieces where there. Only problem is the handles come off easily. It doesn't hold a lot of weight. In my opnion, if your using for light weight items, great buy. If you need medium weight items (paper, pens staplers, etc.) don't bother. Go with something that isn't plastic.
